wouldn't a direct vent to the basement let musty stinky basement air up into the house at times?

I'm guessin if you got a musty, stinky basement--YES, you would be correct. I'd have to figure out how to fix all that.

I have had the best luck with blowing the colder air on the floor away from where I wanted heat towards to stove. I also taped about 1 foot of toilet paper to the center of various door jambs to see which way the air was moving and how much was moving as well. It worked pretty slick.

David McBeth3, thanks for the thread link, I will check it out after I post this reply.

Thanks all !
The wifey liked the hot air going up but it also allowed for a) light from the lower floor up to the bedroom and b) noise as well. Temp. difference between floors was dramatically decreased to 2F difference from lower to upper level (so it worked).

My next honey-do-list item is to replace the carpeting w/hard wood floors ... so I'll be taking that fan out ... try to figure out where to put something similar elsewhere ... maybe re-engineer the idea. I'm still thinking. I think slowly.

Previously, I tried re-hooking up my HVAC lines to where it draws from the stove room and distributed it to the one bedroom (changing after heating season back to the regular cooling line hookup scheme) but the distance traveled via the lines and in-line fan I added to move the heat (8" 450 cfm fan) appeared to minimize its effectiveness.

Its the holy grail for all of us -- getting even temps everywhere desired.

I installed my basement stove directly under my cold air return on my oil furnace and connected a simple metal plenum to it from by stove and the blower from my stove gently pushs hot air to it, it also preheats the air if my furnace should come on.
