Stoker Coal Boiler: Keystoker

Post by Bks » Sat. Sep. 19, 2015 9:30 pm

I bought a house 3 years ago that had a Keystoker in it. As my family has always had Efm stokers I had no clue about the Keystoker. After 3 years of out ten fires I finally took my unit to get the blower on it. I tried everything and had enough. It cost me $180 to get it put on. The problem of it is they charged me labor. I can see if I didn't need the blower to have the furnace run but it was their flaw in the design. I read where the furnace ran fine without it but it was to have more efficient coal. I say it's an excuse to get out of having to take blame in a faulty design. I know lots of people who have the same issues as I do. If the furnace runs great without it why would they need to fab up another blower? Not trying to start any trouble just my feelings on the issue.

The design is quite old, I think someone one day just figured it out and said “why don’t we run a little blower through the fire constantly to help it out in low draft situations.” I bought the parts from Keystoker and did the work myself.

I would have done it myself too but forgot to ask him. I just think if there is a flaw in the design then it should be their responsibility to fix it. I don't have a problem for paying for parts. For them to make money off of their fix just doesn't sit right with me.

I have worked on lots and lots of Keystokers that did not have the aux blower and worked just fine. They designed that to overcome low drafting systems, not a low drafting boiler or stove.

Well I know a lot of people who have the same problem and most put in a water heater to shut it down because they can't keep them lit in the summer. My wife's great grandfather had one and had nothing but trouble with his til he ripped it out and put in oil. My neighbor has an efm and my brother and they never have issues with fires going out.

Do you have a manometer?
Did you measure your draft before you put on the aux blower?
What is your draft with it running and with it off?

Just for the record comparing an EFM to a Keystoker is kinda like comparing a moped to a harley. :D
