David,
The issue with wood stain is, that it penetrates the wood deep, and getting the 'exact' match is difficult. 'Toning' KIWI is easier to work with.
Cheers

First clean the area with Denatured alcohol, than see what the damage looks like. Damage can be deceptive, it can look terrible but when cleaned it can be less than it first appeared. I fixed the damage on a girlfriend's antique dining room set with some denatured alcohol, some 0000 steel wool, a piece of sheepskin, and a bag of dried shellac. The scrape that I fixed on the set was about 1" wide and 8" long. The surface finish was the damaged areaand it looked terrible before I cleaned it. I practiced building the surface thickness up and matching the surface texture before I tried it on the actual table.
Dan.

The damage area looks to be on the left side that rest against the wall. Shave a small piece with a razor and take it to a custom wood shop and have them stain match a couple pieces of trim, one for each side so it looks as if it was made that way or...if the face frame overlaps the front corner by approx 3/32" or an 1/8" you could get a piece of wood veneer stained, varnished and glued to the damaged side.
Trying to stain the damaged area only will stick out like a sore thumb, you will always look at it unless you don't mind.

my 2 cents ;)

Just consider it one of the scars of life,or real world patina. :) Besides, every time you or someone else notices it you can remind yourself or them that you got this piece free because it was scratched.

Well what's the plan? Maybe a corner shelf with a plant on it. ;)
