My bulk load of Blaschak Pea for this heating season is yielding a pronounced red ash. It looks like the Harmony pea that I burned a few years ago (before the Harmony mine closed down) in this regard.

I don't think so. I just hope it is as good as Harmony (or even as good as past years Blaschak).

I may be thrown for a calculating loop by having two appliances heating the house though. I can't fathom accounting for that (yet).

Rethinking this: Is my coal actually Blaschak?

I just looked at the sale flier that was mailed out to me, and also my coal purchase receipt, and both indicate only the words "Premium Coal". It was only in verbal conversations with my supplier well prior to their "sale flier" and also well prior to their ever even taking delivery of this years coal supply that I was told it would be Blaschak. But now that I'm putting things together, the red ash may indicate that what I actually have is something other than Blaschak. :?:

Ironically, my boilers ashing temperature setting is dialed in at a very low 110 degrees (with 5 degrees of hysteresis, whereby ashing initiates when the ash grate temp falls to 105 degrees, and stops when it reached 110 degrees) to fully tame this coal. That is identical to the ashing temperature that I settled upon for Harmony coal a few years back.

Whatever the source, it turns out that I like it a lot. It burns well in the summer (I got mine in early June) and I was teetering upon the verge of summer out-fire trouble burning white ash Stockton when I was totally saved by this new supply of red ash coal. Ash content is no worse than several previous years supplies of coal, and I'm only burning it at the rate of ~1.35 lbs. per HDD, so I'm happy.

Should I confront my (Mennonite/Amish) supplier over this, or just be happy that they sold me some really nice (Harmony like) coal?

You should give them some feedback and tell them you are really happy with it.

Good idea! That may encourage them to keep buying from the same source.

I would totally agree. Not all business buying decisions are based on where the product can be bought the cheapest. Customer satisfaction ranks high on a businesses list of accomplishments.

The coal that I buy in bulk from Jr Delagrange on the Pa/Oh border is also red ash this year. I know for fact he is exclusive with Blashak. I have no complaints either. It burns well in my Hitzer and in the Ka6.
