I had an EFEL w/hopper for 25 years and now a Alaska Kodiak with a hopper for 6. It makes the bed foolproof, banking foolproof and self feeds all day. I've run my stoves hot, but evidently never hot enough to warp them. I wouldn't know how to operate a hopper-less unit, and probably be extremely frustrated.

It takes a real man to go hopper-less...

The Alaska Kodiak a beautiful stove, I've never seen him in Netherlands in the showroom.

the hopper is very easy, especially if you have to work late every day, but it's nice to try without it, I see lots of blue flames

Lots of Blue Flames to be had with a hopper also. It is centered in the box, the glow from behind it enhances the Dancing Ladies.

Sometimes I just sit and stare...

I have a question again from belgium :) , what happens when burning coal, and I use the tabs above the glass door? is that the secondary air intake? is it bad?

you can open them when shaking, and close the primary air, and it might carry the fly ash out the chimney instead of laying in the stove, but thats about it, anthracite does not need much over fire air, it usually can get enough through the coal bed.

my family has 3 saey stoves, the air intake flap does not seal on all of them, you can just bend it so that it does, I think its a fail safe, just like the factory hole, so that you can not shut off the air completely, then it would starve and possibly puff back and cause CO2.
