OMG I hope your not gonna make me vote for the "Comb over Kid"

In other news with three days of high temps and wicked wind I lost another fire. Have moved the LL to 160 . Am I correct that this will allow the timer to start the stoker up to the 170 deg mark(10 deg diff)?

The timer should run all the way up to the high limit setting. Are you sure the baro didn't stick open from those wind gusts?

Rob , unless the thing unstuck itself before I got to it, no. On a day with no heat calls and lets say no timer calls how long would you guess the fire should hold? On those warm days the draft does drop off , say 0 > ,01 with the stoker at rest.

With zero draft I don't think it would last much more than an hour. With some draft it will go several hours at least. I once forgot the power off to mine for 10 hours and it still recovered. The coal has a lot to do with it. Gassy coal like Kimmels will hold a fire longer than some rock hard low volatile coal.

Other than raising the low limit, another trick is to increase the air setting slightly.

How does raising the LL help, as I thought the thing ran up to the high limit? I have it at 160 now. I am burning Hudson coal and I would not say its glassy, never has been.... Its supposed to warm up again this week , Im going to try blocking the baro right off and see what happens.

Blocking the Baro may result in the boiler running hot and all of the coal getting burned in the pot...but it is easy to try.

Keeping the boiler at a higher average temperature can help the draft. You can do this with the low limit setting, or a longer timer cycle.

Also, is there a bypass piped on this boiler? Stratification will make the aquastat read higher than it should.

Rob , there is a by pass in place . It has a throttle valve that is mostly closed .

open she is, captain... standing by......... I remember when I first started the system it seemed that the water back to the house wouldnt get warm , in other words it took all return water and sent it back. now its possible I didnt let it run long enough to mix up. Or maybe I have it piped wrong ???? The yellow handle valve is the throttle valve

with bypass throttle wide open BT is 204 deg and 120 deg water being delivered to house . Which is fine for the infloor heat zone but not for the fintube zone upstairs. I am going to incrementally close the throttle till I start to get 160 deg water to the house un less I hear otherwise.
