How come the door creaks today when it's opened? And what's with all the cob webs?

Good morning! Come in. Please join us for a coffee & a social moment. There's also tea for those that have a need. Breakfast is fast and tasty. Fresh hens eggs scrambled with sausage crumbles and oat bread toast with Renate's raspberry jelly. Enjoy!

These nights below freezing are bringing out the coal burners. Welcome to all the new comers. It can be a bit confusing or even frustrating at first, but once you get past the learning curve you'll love it.

About an hour before the rain started we got shingles on the garage addition. Good thing! We got a solid 3 inches of rain Wed night and BIG winds. Except for the door, the addition is now watertight. No siding yet, but Typar will hold for now. Speaking of siding, gad zooks, the price has gone nuts! Because we got a super grand opening special 21 years ago, we bought the most expensive siding. Back then it was $85 a square, but we got it for $39.60. When we built the garage 14 years later we had to pay $115. Now it's pennies away from $200 a square! Ouch. But, I do understand that I am lucky to still be able to match it. Here are a few pics..... 81 man hours to this point for the three walls, roof & shingles.

The whole next week is predicted to be nice. Enjoy!

Morning...coffee cake muffin and coffee for me this morning. I'll be back about 10 for second breakfast though!

I'm not jealous of the cold you guys are getting already. Still too warm down here to fire up yet.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning folks and how are we doing this fine morning? coffee is very tasty as usual :) . The addition is looking mighty fine there Freddy and its under roof just in time.
I finished unpacking the camper for the winter, cleaned, winterized, and resealed a few spots now all I have to do is get into its parking spot and cover it so if I'm lucky(no rain I hope) I will have it finished tomorrow. Not doing much this weekend just working on a friends camper and a Halloween party tonight and try to relax if thats possible  .
I was going to start the stove this weekend but its going into the 70's this week so maybe next weekend, were getting tired of the cold heat pump air blowing on us  .

Take care boys and girls and have a wonderful upcoming week. :)

Good morning from just barely south of the Mason-Dixon line. Still to warm during the day to fire up the big stove here but do have a fire in the potbelly this morning.
Country ham on a biscuit with fresh honey from the hive this morning.
Have to build a new coop for the chickens today as the old one has served it's purpose. The girls are "movin' on up"...
I can relate to the siding cost Freddie. We converted a garage into an apartment for my parents this summer. I was shocked at the siding costs. Those little cedar shake shingle pieces in the gable were $230 a square ( thanks my wife).
Hope everyone has a good day.

I'll gladly trade you southern folks this 30° crap for some 70° and up air! :D Not a fan of winter ... in case I never make that obvious ... :o

Nice job Freddy! Yeah, welcome to the 21st century, where costs have increased 400-fold and quality remains the same ... or goes into the toilet. :( This is why the only improvements I've made in the nearly 13 years we've lived here are, a new roof, a new breaker panel (to replace the Federal Pacific one that had water pouring into it ...), and a water softener. My late 60's paneling, linoleum, and kitchen will stay till death do us part.

Speaking of that subject, my parents are having their house totally gutted and remodeled. Could buy 3 houses 40 years ago for what it costs today. Friggin crazy. Since all the campgrounds are either closing, or cutting power & water, they are now camping in my yard. I figure that's the least I can do for putting them through almost 2 decades of hell ... :D Contractor said, "It'll be done in August." He should run for Congress ... He now no longer works for the company, and took a big pile of $$$ from them when he left. Oh, you just gotta love 21st century life!

I get to go lay on frost-covered semi-frozen ground this morning to try and fix a recurring starter grind in a Ford big block. Fun fun!

Happy Halloween. Is that right? Should Halloween be happy?

30s this morning, weatherman says a warmup is on the way. :) I will try to enjoy a rare Saturday off and do some prep for winter. I have a car with a sticky front brake after replacing rotors, pads and calipers. I am replacing the hoses today as a shot in the dark and take another look at the caliper. The car stops nice and strait and drives well. The only indication is the extra heat on that side.

Don’t forget to set the alarm for 02:00 Sunday, that is when you have to get up and turn the clock back. Why can’t we do it at noon when we’re all awake? That’s the friggen government for you.

Have a good weekend, watch out for spooks.

Happy Halloween everyone. Great breakfast and coffee, Freddy. Glad to hear you are under roof.

Was 35 here this AM. Awaiting the warm up this week. I hate winter as much as Smitty does.

Take care and be safe all

Hi all,

Still too warm to light the stoves here. We are forecast to be in the mid 60* to the low 70* for the week; just as well as I'm not ready to light the match any way. I'm close but that doesn't count for much. This morning I pulled out the tile saw and cut some firebricks for the Mark I. They have an angle cut which allows the brick to tuck into the back of the firebox. DK brought the tile saw for his terra cota tile fire pit a few years back and it made an easy job of the firebrick. I take back all the negative things I said about spending that money. :|

Tonight I'll put the doors back together and install the gaskets. Then we'll wait until the daytime temp is 55* or less to connect the black pipe and light the match. I figure that will be the end of next week. That's none to soon for me. I, too, am tired of hearing the forced air furnace.

I hope all is well with you and yours. Take care, Lisa

Good Evening ! We had 41* this morning, and rain started at about 3PM. Put a soaking wet blanket over the Halloween Trick or Treaters. A soggy evening, with a low of 42* forecast and 60* and sunny tomorrow. And low 70's for several days next week.

Freddy: I'm glad to hear you got the garage addition mostly enclosed before the monsoon dumped on you.

Smitty: How are your parents going to solve the problem of the incomplete house renovation and the missing funds?

Freetown Fred: Do you have your coal moved to the porch, or indoors? I'm betting you have the Hitzer simmering, keeping the house toasty?

Have a great weekend everyone.

I spy a kitty in Lisa's pic! :)

Greg - I guess the guy heisted the cash from the company. The company is still operating and functioning, but that set them way behind schedule on alot of the jobs they had going on. The payroll account is where the money came out of. There are others dealing with insurance that are in a much, much worse place than my parent's situation, I hear. Work has been steadily progressing, just at a mind-mumblingly SSLOOOOWW pace.

They did the spray foam on both floors plus attic. Going to be a HUGE difference I'd imagine. Place was built in '71, but the builders totally hacked it. Can tell now it was a rush job. Hacked through floor joists to install plumbing, walls neither plumb, nor square, weak spots in subfloor found after original and tile was ripped up, etc ...

Since mom's been around, I've been hearing the comments about how I can live in such a dump, etc ... HAHAHAHA! As long as I don't get rained on, and are warm at night, I really don't much care about anything else. :)

Yikes, early Sun. post. Left at 4:00 AM this (yesterday)morning and drove up through the mountains, over through Ashville, NC and on into Winston-Salem and then up into VIrginia through Martinsville. About 20 miles north of there. Met some fellow Mainers and picked up some smoked mackerel and regular mackerel and deer meat. We knew the scenery was great going up through Ducktown and into NC towards Hickory on 74 but it was before daylight. On the return trip we headed up 58W and connected with the Blue Ridge Parkway and followed it for 40 miles and then dropped down to catch I40 and headed NW over the mountains to Knoxville and down 75 to home. Got home at 11:35 pm. The drive up I40 was spectacular also but mostly after dark again. I can see many weekend drives next summer and fall to see it all in the daylight. Thinking about a Cruiser (bike) to take it in.
Heading to Maine Fri. morning early, I will toot when I pass through the coal region..... ;)

That's Goldie. DK and I found him as a 6 oz kitten on the side of the 4 lane highway just after 9/11; the vet said he'd have been dead in another day. If we had seen him 30 mins earlier he'd have been taken to the animal shelter but it was closed. Once the kids saw him he was here to stay. He's been a good cat but never really lost the feral side of his personality although he's mellowed.
