Couple things, it is a good idea to remove the paddle because the grease attracts all kind of coal dust underneath the paddle this can bind things up and cause premature wear on the feed motor, grease is not enough, This should not contribute to your current problem but is good maintenance and very easy to do

Your mounting of the controls is fine don't,t worry about it.

It would be best to get gaskets from a Alaska dealer they will fit and be much easier to install

Thanks guys for your help&support.

Sorry I haven't been able to come back to the forum earlier , one member of my family was being hospitalised with a serious desease , however things seem to go better for her now.

I've bought the replacement gaskets for my stove but haven't had much time to work on it since.

Stove is going quite well since several weeks now + temps are very mild and I'm tempted to postpone the gasket replacement to next spring when shut down/cleaning time comes , dear half says I've invested too much time on stove this year and that I should consider taking a break. :o

But we'll see :?

Other Heating: Alaska Kast II Console

We have a 9 yr old Alaska Kast Console II which until this year has run great. At the beginning of this year after cleaning it out I couldn't get it to stay burning, until after discovering the combustion fan needed replacement. The dealer thought it might be the combustion motor so they tested it and it seemed to be ok, so I went home installed the new fan and it started and ran for a few week before shutting down. This time we had the dealer come to hour home and he serviced it and installed a new combustion fan and the auto heat control box (dial indicator to feed coal). He said it didn't appear to be a cleaning issue. After several weeks it went out again and I had to replace the combustion fan again because it melted it started and ran for about three weeks then the stove shut off again and melted the fan again. This will be my 4th one this season @ $25 a pop. I did make sure that there is no debris under the grate and I also replaced all the gaskets when I installed the 1st plastic combustion fan at the beginning of the season. I did check the auto heat control box at highest position and it runs continuously so I don't thing that is an issue.

I heard there might be another plastic wheel/fan on the console is there another one I'm missing? I only know of the plastic combustion fan wheel and the plastic fan that sits on top of the assembly.

Heres a pic of the electrical attachments to go over just in case. I am not clear on how you tested the paddle, if you did not push coal and did a dry run to observe the paddle thats good but not conclusive, with no coal in the hopper carefully grab the paddle and slow it down a bit then listen for noise or see if you stop it, don't use excessive force though. What your trying to determine is if the gear case/feed motor is bad. Then put some coal in and make sure its pushing coal to the end of the grate. If all is good that should eliminate that thought.

The grate gaskets are easy providing the are alaska gaskets. Pull the grate, the gaskets should be intact if they fall apart theres your problem. Still at 6 years they need replaced. The3 grate gaskets #17 fold over the feeder housing #2 in the diagram and the grate bottom has a channel that sits on top of them and pinches them in place. The strong back gasket #14 s is flat and sticks in place. Lightly set the grate in place and with a block of wood and hammer tap it up against the strong back gasket then tap down to seal the grate gaskets, don't worry sounds more complicated then it is.

After all this try another fire if it does the same try turning the auto control box up higher this could also be the problem, it could be out of calibration or getting weak, on mine if I set ti to 1 the fire will go out, a minimum fire for me is 1 1/2 and a max is above 5 so its out a bit but still useable. There is a set screw on the knob so it is possible to calibrate but I have not tried it.

Here is the manual with diagrams I spoke of.

Does it really matter how the wires are plugged in? Check out in my pic . The 2 arrows are showing that my 2 wires pointed out in pics are opposite of yours. Do they need switched ? I cant see it mattering but what do I know.

On the side door of the kast there is a 5x5 fan that draws cool air in if this is not working that would cause this, also make sure this fan is blowing in.

The fire is not burning to far up the grate is it? The plastic fan is by design in that if the stove overheats or the strongback grate gasket fails or not installed properly the fan melts and fire goes out so if fire gets to far up the grate near a hopperfire the fan melts
