When I went to tech school for the USAF, in the mid 70s, they cancelled school one day because of "extreme" cold. My memory isn't as good as it "you-sta" be, but I have this vague memory of it being -54*. It was in Rantoul Illinois, and I'm not able to use the link Larry gave us a few pages back.
My room-mate and I went outside with our Parkers and gloves on, and tossed around a few snowballs. Being from New England, it didn't feel all that "extreme" to me, but then again we only were out there for about 10-15 mins.
