A friend called the other day and asked me to help install new smoke pipe for his wood burner. I pulled the old pipe out and it was pretty full of creosote.

It has one of those tin trim plates to cover the thimble. What I've never seen before is what was behind it.

A 10" round terracotta liner through the wall that the 6" smoke pipe was in. The trim plate was just covering the gap between the two pipes.

I'm sure it isn't right, but I'm not sure how to fix it. It's too much to slap some furnace cement into. Should I fill it with fiberglass or something?

Yep, reg. non-faced insulation would do the trick. Although the current set-up had nothing to do with the creosote build up. He's probably just been idling as of late plus not being real consistent w/ pipe cleaning. Make sure the pipes not pushed to far into the chimney.

I stuff pink insulation around metal pipe getting it centered in the thimble . Fill in the last inch or so with mortar for a more finished appearance .

Just a new home owner with no wood burning experience and no mechanical ability. :)

You can get an 8 inch to 6 inch reducer most anywhere, that would fill some of the gap.

The old way was to fill in the gaps with brick or cement rubble and then wet down your bucket of asbestos and trowel it on. Asbestos was great as it could be re-used again and again and it was easy to break the old connection to remove the pipe for cleaning. Too bad we have nothing as good today.

Hey is anybody else wondering about the validity of this "i gotta friend that's a wood burner" crapola??!! :gee:

This sounds a lot like the old mis-direction that one might use when calling the IRS with a question or two. (not that I have ever personally had a reason to call the IRS asking about a questionable deduction or twelve... ) .... my friend was wondering if this might be against the law........ :)
