Has anyone here bought rice coal straight from a breaker in central PA? I live in south central PA but I drive up to the Hazelton area quite often. I have a car trailer that I can haul just short of 3 ton on. My thought was that on my trips up north this summer bringing back a couple loads, if the loaded fuel cost would offset my local cost. What I'm looking for is do the breakers sell in such small amounts, and any idea of costs for good rice.

Hey Dennis, just do a search on Superior (Hegins PA) and UAE (Mt Carmel PA) in the forum you will find a wealth of info plus the opinions of members as to the quality. Right now Superior is $140 a ton and UAE is $130 I like to mix those in equal parts for a nice hot low ash burn.

Of course you could always PM the coal country and brewery tour guide, coal berner!  You just have to buy him lunch and maybe give him some coal.

Minimum is probably around 1/2 to 1 ton at most breakers, the one I did business with would even sell you 5 gallon bucket fulls at $2 a piece at one point but the good 'ol weights and measures put a stop to that. 5 gallon bucket holds about 40 lbs....

That would depend on what the trailer/truck is rated for, you'll exceed its limit long before you run out of room. AFAIK there are no breakers that sell bagged coal, it s all in bulk loose.

Bulk bags:
**Broken Link(s) Removed**Yes you get weighed. :)
I guess it would depend on how much over the limit.
