Barter?

What ever happened to the barter movement?

IIRC it was starting to pick up steam years a go but seems to have subsided.

I agree that the barter society is dead. I have tried to barter my radio flyer kids bike for a new Rolls Royce for years with no takers.

You're not taking enough steps.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_red_paperclip

The website One red paperclip was created by Canadian blogger Kyle MacDonald, who bartered his way from a single red paperclip to a house in a series of fourteen online trades over the course of a year

You're making the mistake of using their currency.

wrong market my friend. you have to go grey or black, and of course suffer the associated risks.

there are many people who would like to receive your services without acknowledging it beyond you yourself. problem is they may also forget or disappear ya after the work is done.

on a serious note, here in flyover country we barter quite regularly. it's as natural a societal and community action as volunteer fire services etc.

Sadly in the Northeast it seems most have their hands out for every little thing. I witnessed one neighbor charging another neighbor to install a screen door. Nothing special or hard about the install either. Myself... Well I would have been insulted if the neighbor offered my anything more than a beer if I had done the "job". The concept of neighbors helping each other is so foreign to people it is scary.. and very sad.

Maybe he didn't like the guy. I have neighbors I'd do anything for and I have some I wouldn't hand a cup of water to if they were on fire.

That concept of family, friends & neighbors getting things done free is a very touchy issue when one is in business like me.......do i repair all family, friends & neighbors lawn & garden equipment for a glass of water ? That would work fine on their end,i can only drink so many glasses of water.
