- Stoker Coal Boiler: Keystoker K4 Boiler
Does anyone know how to do a tear down of the Keystoker K4 blower motor assembly? Came home from vacation and the motor is binding up somewhere...assuming its with the blower fan but not sure. Tried to disassemble but had no luck. Put back together what I had apart and it ran for a bit but now its back to binding up. If anyone has a procedure, tips, or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Can the bearings be replaced or the motor as a whole? There was an unusual amount of oil on the side of the gearbox before I tried to take it apart. Topped off the oil in both reservoirs after I put it back together. Worked fine but didn't see any more oil than when I first noticed it.

blrman07 - It's the motor on the K4 boiler that runs the gearbox and supplies combustible air for the coal fire.
Rob R. - I'm thinking it is the motor over the gearbox. The motor sounded funny last night and just this morning I added oil to it and fired it up to warm the house and I could hear a liquid hitting the fire. Though maybe it was oil and it did take quite a few more drops of oil to fill it back up. So I'm thinking that there may be a seal that went bad on the motor. Not sure if it's got a seal or bearings as I can't separate the gearbox from the motor. Rob how could I tell if the gearbox is bad? or the motor for that matter? I can get the motor going, but when it shuts down and the aqua stat calls for it to run it doesn't always run. It tries to run but makes a God awful noise with no movement like it's bound up inside.
Ok before I was about to post this I called Keystoker and they said there is a coupling between the gearbox and motor that is accessed through the vent and has a set screw to disconnect the coupling. So since I worked last night I'm going to sleep a bit and try to tackle it in a couple hours. Just the whole binding up part has me scratching my head. Either way till then

Ok long story short pulled the plug where where you can change the direction of the motor and noticed some arcing around the contacts. Turns out just dead spots on the motor. Keystoker sending one out today hopeful to have it tomorrow.

While changing the motor, clean the fan and fan housing. They can get pretty dirty over time.
Spin the gearbox by hand and make sure nothing binds up...and an oil change probably won't hurt.

Soak the fan shroud and squirrel cage in hot water
and dawn dish soap then use a small wire brush to scrub
them of any coal dust that does not fall off in the water.
I would also run the gearbox without the fan assembly before
assembling it all back together as the seal on the output shaft
to the fan may be shot.

Thanks guys for all the help. Since I'll have the gearbox off I will change the oil out. Does anyone happen to know the recommended oil for the gearbox? I'm going to assume SAE20 unless anyone knows otherwise. Thanks again

Splash gearbox, use 90 weight gear oil.
