I have access to newspaper archives and have found several articles dating as far back as 1917. These articles are reprints from the U.S. Government and various state colleges, on how to properly operate coal stoves and ranges. There was a coal shortage during those times. The majority of the articles were about bituminous/soft coal, but some were about anthracite coal. These articles were reiterated for at least eight years, with very little deviation.
I use these guidelines to run my cabinet stove and currently with most days in the upper 30's and lows near 20, I am only using 15lbs. of coal or less per day and keep my house around 73*F. My chimney is cool to the touch and the burn rate is low and slow.
If anyone would like me to post the article in it's entirety, let me know.

I would like to see/read the articles. It is always interesting to see what was circulating in the past about coal stoves.

Let me know if you'd like to see more, from different years. Some had a numbering of each item to keep in mind and some had the same information, but no numbering.

Thanks BF. Very interesting to compare it to what we know about coal stove operation today.
And I notice "Uncle Sam" says we all need "check dampers" in addition to an MPD. Does that mean that baro users are un-American ?

I'm do recall reading about an automatic check draft damper as part of an installation in the 1920's, but it didn't elaborate on mechanicals of it. Baro's have a time and place. My coal dealer swears by them and know others that swear at them. To each their own, I guess.Sunny Boy wrote:Thanks BF. Here's an article that says more about the check draft damper. When to use it. We already why to use it.

this is an excellent thread and should be considered for a 'sticky" position at some point.
that is, IF we can avoid debates of the article contents and take them at face value.

Here's an article concerning draft control. Look for 'Best results' article. Great insight about high and low pressure systems.
