It's also illegal / against code to use in a garage. Unless the garage has been deemed unusable buy cars and flammable equipment/ fluid is not housed there.

Awww dam, I'm sorry to get your hopes up. Since my last post, I dug out the inducer and wired it up. Unfortunately it doesn't wanna spin. I can hear the motor groaning and it tries to turn but it won't. It feels really tight. I hit it with some WD-40 and still the same. The summer time moisture and fly ash must have had some bad health effects on it. If I do get it loosened up and running properly, I can let ya know. I'll make some more attempts to get it spinning freely. Again, I'm sorry about that partner...

That's ok, thanks for taking the time check it out. I tried the hair dryer on the flue pipe-- didn't do much. This furnace is an old Luxaire that was used to heat a house at one time. It heats my garage fine (the garage is about 1200 sq. ft.) But it smokes at start up to a point I have to have the garage door open until it reaches temp. which can take a while especially with the cold winters we have here in the mountains. I have looked around for a used coal furnace but with the price of another old furnace plus I would have to hire someone to deliver it and take mine out it gets costly. I think a draft fan will do the trick but I cant see spending the $156.00 for the AD-1 for an old furnace in my garage. I'm hoping to find something less expensive that will work. I'm looking at the Tjernlund DB-2 or D-3. The DB-2 has a squirrel cage type blower like a car heater has. The D-3 has the fan blades like the AD-1. DB-2 is $70, the D-3 is $108. I think any of them will work but I'm concerned about the heat coming through the flue pipe will burn it up. I'm thinking about extending the flue pipe making a u shaped loop and install the fan closer to the chimney inlet, The air temp there should be lower.

Just mount it on the bottom side of a horizontal run. It will be fine there. :)

What makeup is the chimney? Is it block, brick, with or without liner, a piece of pipe and if so is it single, double or triple wall? Does it have a chimney cap on it? And how high above the roof line is it?

Sometimes just a minor change in the flue or chimney will get you a good enough draft to light a fire.

The chimney is made of chimney block about 2-3 ft above the peak roof. no cap.

Do you think the $70 DB-2 with the squirrel cage blower would be enough?

The front view is how the furnace is connected now. As you see there isn't much pipe between the furnace and wall outlet. The frontal view is what I was thinking on doing with the pipe and installing the blower on the upper pipe near the wall outlet.

No, the drawing did not come through. A cap on your chimney could get you the draft you need, and it will keep the water out of your chmney.

Picture the letter U on it's side the ends on the left. The lower end is the pipe coming out of the furnace. The upper end is the pipe going into chimney. I'm thinking of installing the fan on the upper end. The air should be cooler.

Personally, I wouldn't think any elaborate stove pipe configuration is really needed.
Not saying its a bad idea, just probably really not necessary. :)

The AD-1 is $139.00 here. I believe its the only one that is rated for use with coal.

The pipe coming out of the furnace is an elbow with a 2' piece of pipe then another elbow to the chimney hole. not much there. I'm just concerned that the air coming out that close to the furnace will end up burning the fan.
