Iraq Spinning Out Of Control....Again!

I hear all of that.

But what the leadership really wants are the reigns of power. They obviously didn't get them in 2006, or they would have been able to dictate policy since then to a far greater extent than they have. Plus, had they gone ahead with the impeachment, people would either be mad at them for retaliating and/or feel sympathetic with "poor" Bush and Cheney. And for what? A few months of a Presidency by somebody who'd be picked with the Democrats' consent and then could run as an incumbent this year????? Why?

What they're looking for this year, instead, are more seats in the House, the magic 60 (or close to it) in the Senate, and of course the White House. And, having played their cards dispassionately, like the best strategists do, they've put themselves in the best position to do that. Republicans are terrified and in disarray this year, and it couldn't happen to a nicer crew. As the Sicilians say, "revenge is a dish best served cold."

The problems are very tough but, hopefully, there'll be a unified team in DC to address them come next year.

I guess if I try to clear the anger out of my mind I could agree with your dispassionate appraisal, but I just can't. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that a flood of "White House Horrors", just like the sewage that floated to the top in Watergate, would have started to emerge when some of the "Rats" were forced to testify, under oath in criminal proceedings. I know you are a lawyer so I'll ask you this question: Do you think that, given a grand jury & subpoena power, that even a mediocre federal prosecutor could get an indictment & probable conviction of Bush & Cheney just in re the White House's involvement concerning the politically motivated firings of US Attorneys? (I think so much criminal activity would surface on just that subject alone, that GW & Cheney would be making license plates for years to come!)
If not that, then how about the "Outing" of a covert CIA Agent for political retribution? (another federal felony, btw)
Just venting here & I know I'm preaching to the choir.

Edit: Final Point....What good will it do giving the Democrats the White House back & strengthening their power in Congress if they will just continue to do the politically expedient thing & care little about anything but protecting their jobs!

Sure, I think a good prosecutor could make them look awful.

But the worst sentence there is in Washington is losing your power. The historians will handle the rest.

There is so much which is long overdue to be done. Health care, foreign policy, getting the economy out of the crapper, energy policy, restoration of our civil liberties, and on and on. Even though nobody'd rather see these bums pilloried than I, there's just not enough time to waste with recriminations. Get 'em outta there, declare the "Bush Doctrine" at an end, repeal the "USA Patriot Act," and let's move on.

Pelosi's a giant IMO for resisting the temptation and cries to do the shortsighted thing and keeping her eye on the bigger prize: governing. I just hope it doesn't all get screwed up with the women v. black competition that's been going on.

Typical Lemming, you love everything that the useless idiot posts. I just wonder if in 1936 you'd be so quick to jump on his band wagon ( I may be wrong but, I doubt it). Mindless drones like him making empty promises were once legend. History has a nasty habit of repeating its self. Doh!

Tired of them? its actually news now when something like that happens instead of the "norm"....

Here's headline story from yesterday: http://abcnews.go.com/International/wir ... id=5177633

Iraqi Violence Down; War's Root Causes Unresolved

Signs are emerging that Iraq has reached a turning point. Violence is down, armed extremists are in disarray, government confidence is rising and sectarian communities are gearing up for a battle at the polls rather than slaughter in the streets.

Those positive signs are attracting little attention in the United States, where the war-weary public is focused on the American presidential contest and skeptical of talk of success after so many years of unfounded optimism by the war's supporters.

When the economy here is going this badly, people don't want to hear about "staying the course" or the "surge working," especially in the midst of a centuries-old religious conflict between Sunnis and Shiias. (Like we need another intractable religious fight in the Middle East.)

It'd be one thing if we had the wherewithal to afford it, but we don't anymore. We need those Trillions right here at home.

Maybe that's why Obama currently is ahead in PA, OH, MI -- and even FL!

I think my headline trumps yours Richard because it just happened & it puts the lie to this: "Violence is down, armed extremists are in disarray,".......... Violence is never going to end over there & we all know it.
(How many billions of our tax dollars have we wasted over there this month?....& how much of that money went into the pocket of Haliburton?)

You are correct a single incident trumps the last 12 months decline in the violence in Iraq.

@Stockingfull, yes lets give it up now at what appears to be Victory's doorstep.

As for the recent released poll it's from Quinnipac University here's the results from 2004:
http://polipundit.com/index.php?p=5180
#9 - Quinnipiac University Poll. Quinnipiac made predictions in 5 states, and in 2 Battleground States. The QUP made 4 calls right, and 1 call wrong, and was off by an average of 7.00 points. None of their picks was the closest in a state, and one of their final polls was off by more than 10 points. In the Battleground States, the QUP made 1 call right, 1 call wrong, and was off by an average of 5.50 points.

They ranked

And from just recently:

http://stolenthunder.blogspot.com/2008/06/poll-puddling-and-quinnipiac.html
I also noticed clear discrepancies in the Quinnipiac poll. Quinnipiac, for example, says President Bush has a 22% Job Approval rating in Ohio, against 29 percent from a University of Cincinnati poll.

I was also preplexed by Quinnipac’s announcement that President Bush enjoys only 60% from Republicans, when the polls I have seen show around 80% from Republicans. The stated numbers demonstrate a lean to the Left, from what I see. How much of lean depends on how you account for the discrepancies. The problem is while the skewing is evident, it appears to be a result of the methodology rather than simply the weighting. Therefore, the numbers may be taken to reflect the situation only in a general manner and with the normal caveats that Quinnpiac is a good poll, but hardly the most reliable.

A poll which misses by an average of 7 points is not where I would look for an election barometer.

Considering the above I think that information is pretty much useless.

I agree polls have limited utility at best and, this year, there are a number of demographics which are, ahem, rather difficult to poll.

But, at least at the moment, it sure doesn't look like the Hillaristas are going to stay home, and that's very good news for Obama.

And keep your eye on FL. If McCain has to work hard there, it's as good as over. (Which again raises the old question about his mental competence, after endorsing the offshore drilling idea that even Jeb Bush wouldn't go near. That's a very fast way to lose a whole lot of FL votes.)
