Hi all,
I am looking to finally get my stove installed this weekend and had a question regarding chimneys.
Local shop is quoting me at $885 dollars + tax and shipping for a chimney kit from amerivent. It includes the through the roof kit (support box, pipe adapter, flashing, storm collarand cap), 6 feet of single wall pipe and 5 feet of stainless insulated pipe. I can get everything listed from home Depot for $400 dollars out the door and it is in stock. The parts from home Depot are manufactured by duravent.
So tell me, is the guy price gouging or am I missing something entirely?
Regards,
Jeff

Well, are you locked into using a metal chimney? Or could a block and mortar chimney be an option. Block and mortar will live longer than we will. The metal, not so much.

Where it is going, in the inclosed deck made sunroom, a brick chimney is not an option. Size and weight won't allow for it.Lightning wrote:Well, are you locked into using a metal chimney? There are differences in metal chimneys, and metal chimney materials. One important factor is; is one chimney material made of 304 stainless, and the other 316 stainless? The 316 is recommended for coal use, and is quite a lot more expensive. 304 will work but, depending on cleaning practices, and location, you had better keep a close eye on it. Most places have 304. Try to get 316. Here is a site that has 316. It was posted on this site. I saved it in favorites. http://www.olympiachimney.com/ventis-class-a-all- ... imney-pipe

I have not used SS chimney from Duravent, but I have used their stove pipe and it is top notch. I don't know if they have different levels of quality for their products but all I will ever buy for stove pipe is Duravent now.

I completely forgot to check which stainless it was made from. Thank you for the reminder.oliver power wrote:There are differences in metal chimneys, and metal chimney materials. I believe that is the same type I have. I too have been on mine for 5 years with not a sign of any issues.just peter wrote:I use 316L with titanium, so far after 5 years of use no problems.

There is already a thread about SS chimney's somewhere on this board I believe.
What I remember of it, most off them where sh**, um let say not so good, wich made me afraid.
There was one member who said he was using it for 20 years with no problems and that was with 316L ti material, that was a relieve for me .

All that "certified" double and triple wall stove pipe and accessories are super over-inflated price-wise. I myself would rather have red brick, but the cost of that installation is "usually" more, than the stainless. I refused to pay the prices, and was fortunate enuff to find 6" double wall Metalbestous used, cheap, and in great shape in the building supply classifieds.

I have/had a lifetime warranty on my flue that states if it ever fails that it will be replaced for free including labor . However the catch is that I must have it inspected and cleaned every year which is anywhere from $100-200 and after I saw what the inspection involved which was basically nothing , and with the volatility of businesses in the market not staying afloat, I decided to do the inspecting and cleaning myself because I do a better job. So I am not sure how easy it would be to pull the warranty card in the future , but after a few years of not paying anyone to do a crappy job I would have enough money to replace it anyways . My point is having a liner that has been supported with a lifetime warranty , labor and all, I think it is a good chance that the 316L will last a good while .

I really can copy this including the lifetime warranty, but that said, I think the next chimney will be a brick one.
