Hi Jack, May I add a little info that may help repliers better answer your post. You were saying you have a HITZER 30-95, and it was a touch on the small side. A little bigger stove in the D.S. would be the 1400. Now, the 1400 may bring you up what you're lacking with the 30-95. BUT, what happens if the temps drop real low again? Are you going to be lacking with the 1400. You may want to LOOK at the 1500. I'm going only by specs on paper work. I don't have enough D.S. experience yet to make that call for you. Actually, Where are you KingCoal???? You have lots of experience with the D.S. 1400. The advice you gave me is spot on... :) .

Jack,to me,the biggest stinker is Your Friend being away for up to 20 hrs. at a time. Crawling through the door drop dead tired doesn't makefor a good hand-fired event to me. Just something to ponder.... A D.S. with the hopper may help hold an untended fire. Let's see what actual owners chime in with.

20 hour shifts = Get a stoker stove.

Preferably one tied into existing duct work, or hot water heaters if they're already in the house.

so, do I have this right ? there is a F.B. upstairs that is going to stay in operation and there is a desire for a second basement stove but it must run on pea size coal to be acceptable.

is that accurate ?
