Was it "coal" or "stove?" Typically, a solid fuel appliance that is a boiler or furnace is of no concern to an insurance company. They get antsy with stoves as they are considered "supplemental" appliances and put them in the same catagory as kerosene heaters and other risky appliances.
Didn't matter coal or wood was a no no.

We just switched to USAA. My father in law is retired Navy. Saved us about $60/mo on the car insurance and we threw home owners into the deal for $1200/yr.

I don't know how they will be if I ever had to file a claim but they were easy to sign up with.

Same with pellets, cherry pits, corn and kerosene. They don't like stoves, no matter what the fuel.

Sounds like a pretty unreasonable insurance company. My stove had a wood boiler when I bought it and Erie had no issue with it. My brother's home has a coal boiler and a coal stove, both were approved by the insurance company.

It was yrs. back but State Farm came out & looked my house over including stove install & that was when I only had the wood stove. It's listed as solid fuel stove. Most times that grass on the other side only LOOKS greener George. :)

I like dealing with our agent, this agency is now into it's 4th generation in our area.We do the repair & service work on their lawn mowing equipment, for their office grounds & for each of the 4 family members involved.I don't do any checking around to see if they are looking out for me.The trusting goes both ways for us.

My insurance rates are great: I just don't have any!!

It is scary in many ways, but I also have a few other houses so I'll never be homeless if this one burns.

Really it all stems from my sheep because with them they consider me a farm, and with it, high farm rates. I try to pass them off as pets, but granted it would be a lot of pets...and with unusual names like Number Seventy Seven, Number Two Hundred and Twenty Five, and Eleven Hundred and Ninety One. Yeah we go by number here and not by names like Clover, Goldenrod or Gertrude.

I don't recommend going insurance-less, but I look at insurance as legalized extortion too!

I do the same George. Then I got something to throw at my agent if push comes to shove. Wise move my friend. :)
