I am using a different oil in my stoker drive this year. 80w-90 "Moly Universal" from Texas Refinery. It is a tacky gear lube that is intended to climb gears, and it does a nice job of quieting things down without being thick enough to interfere with proper operation of the ratchet drive. The jury is still out on the stoker cover, I am not sure if it makes it the ratchet quieter or makes it echo. Regardless, my computer desk is located right over the boiler, and I hear the hum of the blower and only the slightest clicking noise. If there is any amount of noise in the house (kids, tv, etc) I can't tell it is running at all.

The Lehigh coal puts out an impressive amount of heat. Some years I have run the stoker on 5 teeth, but I see no need this year. Even with it below zero out and a bunch of things using hot water it doesn't seem to run for more than 20-30 minutes.

I have never had to run the air this high for 4 teeth of feed. I had it set just over 4, but on long burns the burning coal was creeping onto the ring around the pot. I even double checked to make sure it wasn't accidentally set on 5 teeth. Guess the coal just burns a little slower than what I have used in the past.

That's a sweet unit. I believe Wood n Coal has the same one - always marvel at how well engineered that thing is.

Maybe some day I'll try and find one of those ... if I ever get a bulkhead to the basement installed ... :o

Mine has the same stoker, but it's a 350, smaller boiler (it's the "baby"). They are excellent machines! I could go on forever about them. :?

Great vid, Rob, boiler looks great!

I'm running 4 teeth and 5.5 air on DiRenzo rice.

Ahh yeah that's right - sort of like motorcycles. A 350 vs. a 500. Now that I understand! :)
