Six days after retiring the Glenwood No. 6, it snowed and I got coal withdrawal. Pulled into service the first coal stove I ever bought (everybody should have a couple coal stoves backup), an old Chubby Junior. Serial number 7059 tested 6/13/1979. Shortly after acquiring said stove I met Larry Trainer and bought a reconditioned Chubby senior from him. That stove is in use by a friend's mother who was in need. The baby Chubster was always my favorite. It is perfect for a sitting room off the kitchen to be lit on demand in cold weather (what's that?). Thank you Larry Trainer!

LM, You have found the secret. Coal stoves do actually get better with age, unlike their operators. Mike

Lots of people ask me that. I like anthracite. I am just not using it as primary heat this year. It is expensive and labor intensive. I reserve the right to revert. I like it no less than the rest of you and it is fun-- sort of.

Ha ha Candy, I was just at Larry's shop Friday getting the full tour of his new production. I saw a 35 year old stove he made to look like new. One thing he does now is high-quality paint on the cast instead of polish. It is a lot easier to maintain the shine and break-in firing produces a lot less smoke. Very practical if you want to run a kettle on the top. No more water stains.Candyman wrote:Just ordered a refurbished Chubby from Larry today... Can't wait to try it.

I dunno Canaan man, oil just may stay cheap for a while. It does not matter to me coal radiant heat is just superior and I am warmer. I will even pay a premium to heat with coal.
