It only damages the vegetation if it is above ground anything below ground is fine. Beets are hardy and can take the cold and peas like it on the cool side. I am hoping we do not have a repeat of last year, a very cold spring, but so far that is exactly what we have. A couple warm days then back down we go. Alaska has better weather then we do right now. They already have leaves on their trees, I only have the start of leaves. People are already picking lilacs I am not even close to having lilacs yet. My coal stove should be out by now not still running. My thermometer said it got down to 45 as the low it is a whole 47 right now my stove is at 200 and it is 73 in here. I think the global warming is only happening in the Arctic circle where the big ice chunks are melting it sure is not happening here. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Yep, beets, potatoes, carrots, turnips, etc. They're the only things to be planted before Memorial Day. I like to refer to it as common sense. Been a policy for generations. Of course people weren't as brilliant back when!! toothy

We lucked out. It was only 37 degrees here this morning. Still calling for 34 degrees tomorrow morning though.

Careful there, Larry. I was labeled a nutjob when I said that exact thing several years back.
Well, this beats them all for craziness. It is 44 degrees here right now, and suddenly it is snowing to beat the band, and it's starting to stick on the wooden back porch rail. Never seen anything like it before. I had been comfortably reading a book while lying on the couch, and my wife (who had just returned from Church) called me to the window to see it.

Update: This weirdness only lasted a scant few minutes at best, then it stopped and the evidence rapidly melted. And now the sun is shining brightly.

Updated update: My wife says it actually lasted about 7-8 minutes. I only caught about the final minute of it. She said it started while she was on her way home, and she drove through it for about 5-6 minutes while returning from Church.

Larry,

 Im shocked that your latest report lacks significant elements of proper scientific reporting. To wit:

lack of average flake size

# of flakes per min/sqft

probability of occurrence this late in the season

and most importantly, when is enough enough!!!!

:D

Well Monday morning is here start my new job today it will be great 1 mile to work and 1 mile home, no more traveling for me. So as much as I did not want to get out from under those nice warm covers I pushed myself to get out of bed. I moseyed to the bathroom then to the kitchen for that first cup of eye opener. When I turned and looked out the window what to my wondrous eyes did appear, no it wasn't Santa and his 8 tiny reindeer it is may not Dec. but it was a trace of snow in the garden. This can't be I exclaimed, it is may we are suppose to have warm weather to go with those may flowers. Dam that Government they lied again this global warming is getting out of hand it is a whopping 35 degrees. It is warmer in Homer Alaska this morning it is 45 there. I hope all have a good day and stay warm.

I waited until it hit 80 last week and then put my seedlings that I started indoors out in the garden.

Hail and snow yesterday during church.

This morning it's 34 degrees.

I deashed only the right side of the Vig Saturday night in preperation for the "cold" wave.

It's May and instead of cleaning out the stove and summerizing it, I'm lighting it off to keep warm.....in the middle of May

32 and sunny here this AM., with frost. Last year I had my garden planted by this time, although I usually never plant until Memorial Day as FF said earlier. This year I'm burning the black rocks and will be for at least another week.
