As to why smaller coal burns longer and gives off less heat despite having far more overall air space, think of the pressure drop (friction head) for fluids traveling through small pipes vs. large pipes and then remember that gasses (air) flowing through constricted spaces would behave the exact same way. Also every elbow (turn) encountered causes more of the same flow velocity robbing friction head. And every decrease in nugget size increases the total number of jagged edges present and offers vastly increased surface area, both of which also raise friction (drag) and rob flow velocity. Liquid or gas, It is merely fluid dynamics either way.
