Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 30-95

Post by smokeyCityTeacher » Sat. Jan. 09, 2016 7:13 pm

How well does the T stat on the 35 work for burning wood.
This winter I'd like to burn wood for a while until the weather turns and stays cold for more than a day at a time.
Anyone have experience burning wood and using the t stat to control a wood burn in the Hitzer 35?

I will be experimenting starting as soon as this hopper full burns through - and am curious if anyone else already has done this.

Thanks

I gave it a try when I had my 30-95 but never worked too well just turned everything black inside. Much easier to use coal, just turn it down as low as you can and crack a window open if needed. Even tried those Eco-Fuel Blocks in my 50-93 they worked ok I guess not really worth it in my mind. But give it a try and see what you think ..... maybe you will have better results.

If you ever used an older pre-UL listed, grate type wood stove, that is how it will work. I used my efel to burn wood some and its about the same. I also burn wood in both my Chubby and frankenstove during the off season. Not terribly efficient and yes it creates more soot, but it will work and keep you warm. I can actually get overnight burns in my Chubby Jr which is amazing considering its size. On the bright side, your wood can be a little green OR wet and still burn (I emphasize the word OR). More soot when wet or green but it will burn. Fire your stove hot once a day to help control the soot and make sure to clean it good before switching to coal. Get the wood burning fairly well or let it burn down before opening the door. Or just use coal and open your windows as mentioned.
