I have the check damper elbow apart and have cleaned the check damper and it's mating surface on the elbow. It operates smoothly and feels like a snug fit with no shake or wobble. I replaced the old wheel retainer pin which was worn and loose. When in the closed position and I hold the elbow up to a light I can see light coming thru a gap at one edge of each of the triangular openings possibly .060 wide. The outside edge of the spin draft wheel is in solid contact with the outside edge of the elbow mating surface. The way it is now it will create a slight draft leak. Cause for concern or were they made that way?

Likely made that way - mine does the same.

However, with a firepot the size of the #6, I doubt you'd notice a difference if it was a tighter fit, or not. Unless you have a really pour drafting chimney system to start with.

If the fit still bugs you, you can slip some course emery cloth under the outer edge of the wheel and by twisting it back and forth, sand the back side of the edge down so that the slots are closed up better.

Thanks Paul. My chimney has very good draft. As far as the damper, I think I'll leave well enough alone :)

I think Glenwood designed it that way, to eliminate some of the fly ash, floating around your ash pan, and keep the surroundings cleaner. :D
