I have the combine auto fill/pressure regulator/TPRV on my boiler, keeps the pressure within limits without any issues.

Hello Rob,

I do have an automatic fill valve but in the course of events the expansion tank became water logged again so its shut off.

Dan Holohan discusses this in his books extensively and he states that the fill valve should be shut off as it will cause the tank to become water logged if left open. He also stated he still has the same water charge in his boiler at home in his steel expansion tank from when he moved there.

As I type the boiler is cycling, the baseboard is ticking and shedding heat and it just shut down
burning the 4 year old dinosaur juice.

So far so good.

I fired the boiler up again early yesterday in preparing for the cold weather that arrived last night. As luck would have it the power was knocked out on this side of the valley during the night and I made sure the stoker was turned off at 5:30 and I waited until the power came back at 7:30 and started a new fire in the stoker before I left for town. I added more pins to keep the fire going, so far so good.

Do you have a B&G Airtrol fitting on the tank?

Hello and good morning Rob,

Yes my airtrol valve is at the bottom in one of the one inch N.P.T. tapping near the tank base ring weldment.

They use a section of thick walled steel tubing to create the tank base ring weldment for the vertical mounting option for the steel expansion tank. The side of the steel expansion tank has two one inch tappings welded in it which is on the bottom when the tank is hung from the ceiling.

The tank has 10 gallons of water in it and a 5 gallon air cushion bubble to absorb the micro bubbles in the system after which the cooler water flows by gravity back into the steam chest tapping.

The autofill valve is shut off and the baseboard system is not leaking.

The 15 gallon tank I have is designed and constructed as a multipurpose tank and can be used upright in an open to air vent through the roof system as well. It has 2 three quarter inch N.P.T. tapping's on what would be the top which I am using for the gauge glass.

I added 8 more pins; 4 pins at 7 minutes and 4 pins at 20 minutes to the Intermatic 30 minute timer and I have not had an out fire since then at warmer out side temperatures and the 1,000 High temperature furnace insulation layer is holding in the heat very well allowing for the lower water temperature.

I am still maintaining one to three inches HG. of vacuum for the forced draft, four to ten P.S.I.G. water pressure with 140 low, 160 high, 15 degrees differential temperature, 190 degrees temperature on the L6006A with 15 degrees differential. I have 2 inches of dead ash, 2-3 inches of fire and 3 plus inches of unburned coal that is off gassing during the burn cycle with 8 threads out on the stoker.

Suburban Propain called me this past Wednesday and asked if I needed oil yet and I said no thank you I am fine. I told them last year I am cancelling my silver service contract with them anyway last year, I guess they were "cold" calling for a sale HAHA not going to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I need Kerosene I will buy it from Ehrhart Energy anyway.

I am happy to report that boring is good, I am using 2-3 bags of rice coal a day and I have plenty of heat for this old house with lower water temperatures and pressures with speed two on the B+G NRF 25 circulator(no check valve).

I am saving money to add a gearbox, blower motor, nylon cam and timer motor to the spare parts bin.

I hope this recent cold spell will kill the blood and deer ticks even more.

So far so good.
