I tried Kimmels nut this year because Tractor Supply had it for $289.00 a pallet. That's a good deal around here. Until,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you burn it. :mad3: I have had to dump and restart twice in the last two weeks because of clinkers. What makes a clinker? Is it plain rocks getting in the coal? It seems to happen more when I run the stove hotter. 400-450°
I burned Blaschak for five years and only had one.

They say the red ash coal will clinker faster than white ash, but you are the first to post on getting clinkers at that low of a temperature that I've seen on here. Here is some readig material, along with some tips that may help you remove them without dumping your fire.

Here Come the KINKERS!!!

I too had to shut down my box stove on 2 occasions due to TSKK...Tractor - Supply - Kimmels - Klinkers, it never happens at a good time.

Clinkers can be "fished" out with a hook tool so you don't need to shut down. With a little practice, you can get a feel for it and be good at pulling them to the top. :)

That's true but I must say there is nothing like "a new fire smell"

Hi Charlie.

I'm running the same Kimmel coal as you and I was just thinking how little trouble I've had with clinkers this year. I am running a little cooler though so maybe that is the difference. The prismatic grates in my old Glenwood stove do a great job of chewing up any clinkers which might be another difference.

I ordered my coal during the summer and got some of the first batch that came into the Thomaston store. If yours came from a later batch it may be entirely different coal.

Hope you figure it out!

Dennis in Spruce Head.

The conversation about clinkers and stove temps got me thinking. Stove temperature vs. how hot it is burning is only relative to a particular stove. To illustrate here is a comparison, if I have a stove that has 10 square feet of heat exchanger running at 500F that might be considered ho but if a different one with 20 square feet running at 350F it might be considered running cool yet needs to consume the same amount of coal so fire bed would have to be at close to the same temperature to get the same BTU output.

Ya "caught" some good sized ones there on your linked post thread. I just let the stove go low and dig them out with my fireplace shovel ... I've gotten some big balls of clinkers (with both Blashack and Reading) out (6-8" diameter) on occasion.

Do different coals automatically yield massive clinkers? I don't know.

Hey Dennis, the old boys knew how to make a stove back then. :)

I went through a ton of TSC Kimmels with no issues whatsoever. I just got a load of bulk delivered from my regular supplier and immediately started getting kryptonite klinkers. I WAS running the stove a little harder over the weekend to keep up with the snow. Hopefully things will get back to normal when I turn the temps back down a bit?

I've seen a couple tons of clinkers in my lifetime, but I've never seen one that looked like that  . Are you sure all the pieces of your stove are still attached? :eek2:
