Hi oeespo, does your stove have a lever that puts the stove in a down draft state...if so you may need to have it in direct draft while establishing the proper fire and then switching to indirect draft.

...that should speed up establishing your fire.oeespo wrote:Lever up as in this pic puts the fumes directly out the flue pipe. That's where I have it now

that handle on the right should be UP so that the damper is open until the fire is really working.
open that, close the ash pit door and turn the rear air flap dial to 15.
wait....................................when you get about 300 on the stove pipe pu tthe front handle down in front of the feed door, turn the rear dial down to 9. use the MPD as the manual directs.

Thanks for the details Steve. I looked at a photo of the stove and saw the extra handle on the front and then a light bulb mysteriously appeared over my head. This stove looks and sounds like a powerful hand fed furnace.KingCoal wrote:that handle on the right should be UP so that the damper is open until the fire is really working.

The only thing I can add to what has been posted is avoid poking at the coals or shaking it until it is going good. Coal is different than wood and if you disturb it too much it will go out for sure.
If it does go out, yes, you would have to dump the coal and start over, but give it a few hours if necessary to come back burning.

To restart dig a hole in the middle and make a new fire, preferably with charcoal.

You're good here, I did some reading on your stove and it can be tied into a hot air distributing plenum, for what it's worth I took a little hand fed stove and turned it into a little furnace...Maryanne or Ginger?oeespo wrote:Did I post this in the wrong section?

Remember what were all talking about here...
Until the corner "louvers" are buried well under coal the air can keep bypassing the grates/fire.
