Well finally fired up the hitzer today. Smoke billowed out every time from the wood fire as I added coal. Now I don't get the smoke stink (Blashak coal). Flue temps decreasing all day. Now down to 200-225. temp gage just after mod. mpd is wide open. Blower kicks on for 10 sec every few minutes.
Just checked. dial-a-heat is on 9. Goes to 15 but seems to a mechanical bind as the door lifts no higher if you try to force it.
Am I doing something wrong?? 1st time ever for me.

Did you fill it completely to the top of the fire bricks with coal?
First loading could easily take 80+ pounds. Put it on in layers, letting each layer catch fire before adding the next. You only need to layer the first fire.

Do not force the door open, it will break. The door only opens so far, the difference between the 9 and 15 is how long the door stays open.oeespo wrote:Well finally fired up the hitzer today. Then let the ash door open till she's burning good. You may also need to just crack the load door a smidgen to ward off a puff back.
DO NOT leave it unattended for any duration of time while the ash door is open. Don't wanna over fire it.

Cool. Crack the the load door open a smidgen (1/4 inch or less) and leave the ash pan door open. The blue flames should show up soon (15 minutes give or take some). Let the pipe run up to 300 degrees before making any changes.

Close your load door, leave the ashpan door open and see if it picks up, and read this thread: Basics of a Hand Fired Coal Stove
