I learned something this week. The wife reported the dryer would not get hot and therefore would not dry clothes. It is a gas dryer and after seeing the igniter would not get hot I replaced it because…well I had a spare! That didn’t fix it so a little google research led me to a thermal fuse located on the air duct near the fan. I guess this is to prevent you from burning down the house. She may have run the dryer during the snowstorm and the duct was obstructed or maybe something else caused it to blow but either way it was the reason the heater would not work.

Now a tip for you do it yourselfers; I picked a fuse up locally for $16, I ordered a pack of 2 on line for $5.11 and free shipping. It is a cheap part to have on hand if ordered online but a crapshoot if you have to pick one up in a hurry should it blow.

Thanks for the tip! My gas dryer is pushing 25 years old.... it may BE 25, I just can't remember. I know we had it for a time before we moved here, and that was 21 years ago. I hope it lasts forever as I'm sure the new ones won't last that long.

Good info! One other thing to keep in mind is many dryers get replaced because they won't dry clothes. Towels or jeans run for an hour and come out warm but wet. New dryer gets purchased and installed but guess what? Same result! This is caused by a severely restricted dryer vent from lint. Dryer vents should be cleaned at least every 2 years. Most of us never clean them. Also its a serious fire hazard. Clean those vents!!!

My father was an appliance repair man for over 30 years and told me that there is nothing on a dryer that cannot be fixed. Washing machines are a different story because you have the pumps and its cheaper to buy a new machine then have a pump replaced. Even then be careful, if you have infants in the house their socks can go over the rim of the washer and get sucked into the pump. You think your pump is bad, but nope, just a tiny sock.

My next dryer will be a Speed Queen gas unit instead of electric.

Below is a great site for any appliance related questions. It's sort of the NepaCrossroads for appliances.
