Hand Fed Coal Stove: Crane # 44

Post by plcjr1001 » Mon. Feb. 01, 2016 2:13 pm

I received an old Crane Model 44 Coal Cooker that I wish to install in my small 300 square foot hunting lodge in Maine for heat, burning wood, not coal. I checked with some of the local installers and they say they can't install it because it isn't "listed". Of course not knowing anything about such things I walked away without further inquiry. However, looking at the label on the stove, it says it's UL1482 approved. Is this the listing they are referring to and in general, is there any reason(s) why this can't be installed? It was in use just a couple of years ago in Mass. Any help or commentary is greatly appreciated!

I suspect it is not listed as a wood stove with EPA approval. It is a coal stove and probably not subject to that approval.

If it is UL listed, you should be able to have it installed.

In my opinion, it is a poor choice for a wood stove. It is optimized to burn anthracite.
