Stop calling us "Baby Boomers"

OK, this one is only likely to appeal to a certain demographic, I know. But I still think a lot of people will find it interesting. There's a lot of people who have been saddled with the label "baby boomer." Some of those individuals have had it with that stupid term and have started to argue for it to be replaced with "sixties generation.":

Maybe that's better that just being called a 'sixty year old'' I'm not there yet,, and am trying not to rush into my sixties either..

But,, since I DID grow up in the Nineteen-Sixties, and had most of my 'teens-experiences' in the sixties... I'm not so sure that is a good label either !! :? :shock: :o :lol:

How about 30 years old with an extra 25 years of experience.. and about a million miles of rough roads??? :lol: :lol: :D :shock: :? Yes,, I resemble that :lol: :mad: :roll:

I really don't care what I'm labeled,,, as long as the term isn't derogatory... Like 'hippy' or Druggy, or several others that have thankfully disappeared down those million miles of rough roads.. :sick: :P :D

I was born in the early 70's. That makes my generation the "*censored*" generation based on what most people my age are like. Being a teen in the 80's was tough; the dope sucked and was too expensive and all the STD's and the general publics conservatism really put a damper on any fun.

I was born in 1952 so I guess I'm a baby boomer. I really don't care what I'm called as long as I'm not called late for dinner.

I was born before 52 and Greg, you are right, the sixtys were the best years. Great music,no pollution stuff on cars cheap gas. I bought a new 1967 VW for around 1900 dollars and could drive all week on 3 dollars

We moved to south Fla. in 1952 my dad managed a concrete plant. Hialeah was nothing but farm land for miles around. I was down there a few years ago and drove through the old neighborhood and couldn't even find our house.

Don't ya wish you had bought about 100 acres of that 'worthless land west of the freeways and turnpike, but not too close to the everglades/swamps... ??

I remember driving down Woodward avenue, in my first car, a very rusty '61 VW beetle.. and 'filling up' at the 'STAR' gas station... the tank was near empty... it took 9.6 gallons... and drumroll please... the total was $1.82... gas was $0.189 per gallon... Then a year or so later, fuel was up... all the way to 25.9.. and I was feeding a Formula S Barracuda.. it got about 15mpg...

I was really born in 1972. I just wanted to see how many old farts were out there. Just kidding. I graduated H.S. in 70. Five of us used to kick in 2.00 each. Buy a case of beer, fill up my T-bird and cruise all evening. If the kids did that today they'd be in jail.

Boy does that bring back memories, almost. Not advocating drinking and driving but we did the same thing. On the rare occaision when we got pulled over, the cops would scold us and tell us to go home. Now days, there would be a swat team from a helicopter repelling onto the highway. There is alot more traffic on the road today for sure.
I was in a VW bus that got pulled over once around 1970. There were probably 8-10 people inside and alot of pungant smoke if you catch my drift. There was a quarter keg tapped. I'll never foget the sight of the drivers window being opened under a street light and all that smoke billowing out in the officers face. He took one look inside and asked if anyone was in better shape than the current driver. One girl volunteered and she was told to drive us home or somewhere off the road. Can't begin to imagine what would happen today. It was a simpler time.

It's still pretty simple in my county but it's a fight. Example: There are 30 people in the graduating class, now if Jimmy's dad is the sheriff and you hang out there drink beer and eat pizza weekly he's not going to send you off to jail for being .001 over the limit. Jimmy grows up and becomes Sheriff, he's not going to send you to jail either. State Trooper Big Dick Johnson on the other hand, he gets a medal for sending country boys to jail. He's got MADD and all the other organizations feeding cash into his boss's pocket so he has to crack down hard to keep everyone safe. I can see in areas where there is a lot of traffic, drinking and driving is crazy. On the other hand, in an area where there are no houses for 10 miles what's the worse that can happen?

You guys who grew up in the 50's and 60's, what do you think about the gist of the piece. You comfortable with "baby boomer?" Or do you think there's a better choice?

I was born in late 1946 & I don't mind the "Baby Boomer" nametag. (My Grandsons can't believe there was really no TV when I was born!.....hobbling back to the rocking chair now.. )

I don't mind the label 'Baby Boomer' it isn't derogatory,, it was probably the first well used media term for the group of us born then,, it is pretty well entrenched.. I don't think anything is going to chang the label..

'The sixties Generation' sounds like a rock group or a tv comercial slogan to me..

The media can call me anything they want,, just don't spend all my Social Securtity before I can collect it, and Stop raising my property taxes so I won't have to sell the farm 'cause I can't afford the taxes, even though the mortgage is paid off. Now that would seriously piss me off!! and it is looming on the horizon !!
