Anyone know the details on the Shear pin to buy locally? Any recommendations on where to buy? I had one break today. Seems the wet coal compacts and I have to clean it out occasionally. Maybe time to replace the whole auger/pipe assembly.

Thanks,

Dave

We might be able to give some suggestions if you filled out your profile so we knew where "locally" was at :D

Don't know about the box stores but if your lucky enough to be near a good old local hardware store you can just go down & I bet they can fix you up. ;)

Any EFM dealer can have them sent directly to you. Do not try and substitute something from the hardware store.

Still burning wet coal? After the years of problems you had I thought you worked out a way to dry the coal.

From the EFM factory. If you are aware of something at the average hardware store that fits property and breaks at 25 ft pounds, please share.

Also try to figure out why the shear pin broke in the first place, here is a post with some good info on that: Reasons for the Pin Shearing on EFM Drive Mechanisms

For a while EFM was offering 12 shear pins for $5 shipped, not sure if that is still the case.
Considering that a $5 supply of shear pins can last a lifetime and using an incorrect substitute can break parts costing hundreds, I encourage people to only use the factory shear pins.

Rob, it's just like when I worked for Westinghouse Trans Div., when in West Mifflin, Pa. I would either take the Buss sticker off or cover it over with one of ours & repackage the fuse. When I went to Miami, Fl. as a stupidvisor I could either shut down a transportation line for a blown fuse that an engineer would keep replacing & blowing without finding out why or have someone else work that job while I went to Radio Shack & bought some more fuses. There are only so many actual fuse or shear pin makers in the country & I highly doubt that EFM manufactures their own but you can keep some on stock & if you ever run out either send for some or hope for warm weather. Not trying to tell anyone what to do but to each their own. ;)

I've been running for close to ten years and haven't busted one yet. They are cheap.

We use a brass welding rod, all I can tell you is they have successfully broke on the Van Wert.

Unless they start breaking a lot I wouldn't be going through that. I may be wrong but I don't recall the pipe and auger on our Van Wert ever being replaced. I know it's never been replaced in at least the last 25 years. If it breaks again pull the auger and pipe and clean it out, likely have rock or something else larger stuck.

I didn't look back to his thread ,but I think he said he will still be an EFM dealer, not going to recon units anymore.

As a repair shop that repairs snow blowers that also use shear pins,i will strongly advise the customer to use the designated shear pin

In their snow blower auger or their EFM auger.

Don't be stupid enough to go to a hardware store & buy a pin that "SHOULD WORK" :oops2: :gee:

The welding rods are the same diameter of the shear pins which are also brass at least on the Van Wert. Whether it's softer brass I don't know, what I do know is they have successfully broke for me if you want to call that success.

Wow. Thanks for all the posts! I live outside Boston MA in Northborough.

It seems the auger at the pot cakes up with wet fines and I have to scrap them out otherwise hard to turn. I have pulled the auger in the past and did not see anything in the coal in the pipe which would cause it to be hard to turn. I run it backwards and then forwards a few times, and this usually makes it easier to turn.

Thanks,

Dave

Last month I bought some pins .65 each.
I also had a dilemma with wet coal too. Finally my coal is dry. It was frustrating.

Try Buck Plumbing and Heating in Milton, PA
Maybe they will ship some out. They are nice people and an EFM dealer.
