Since we're almost at the end of the heating season I thought I'd report my total so far:
5.1 ton burned. This doesn't include the 3580 lbs I brought home yesterday.

Forgot to mention less then 1 cord of firewood and maybe 5 to 10 gallons of oil for the furnace. Oil fired hot water heater not included.

I've gone through 4 1/2 tons so far but if the present weather pattern continues, I'll probably burn through much of April. Another interesting stat might be, how much oil did you save this year. For me it would be roughly 825 gallons.

Can't tell, in 18 years I have never gone through a single heating season using oil only. The oil furnace has always been the back-up heat source. I must say with the 2 coal stoves I can heat this place completely without using the oil furnace. Not so when I had the 2 wood stoves.
All I can say is that if I had used oil alone this heating season I would not be writing this right now because I would have no electricity and no DSL due to the oil bill. Or I would just be starting to thaw.

This season ends June 30 and the new season begins July 1st, no? Approximate total burned since July 1, 2007 to April 6, 2008 is 11,250 lbs. I should get by with under 14,000 lbs total for the 07-08 season. Superior Preparation, buckwheat, burned in Keystoker KA-6 boiler.

GAW, What part of the world are you in? How much of that total is domestic hot water only in the non-heating season? Thanks.

Schuylkill county, PA. About 500 pounds a month during the summer. I have a small, by todays standard, two story farmhouse. Larger old houses in the area use 10 or more tons a year.coalkirk wrote:GAW, What part of the world are you in? How much of that total is domestic hot water only in the non-heating season? Thanks.
I burned 7 1/2 tons so far. I was hoping 8 tons would do it for 12 months but not going to happen.I burned about 20 gallons propane to exercise the furnace and for the cook stove, all heat and hw was strictly coal derived. We were also warmer. With LP the thermostat was set at 60, with coal 72. This time of year the LP would have been off for the summer and we'd be wearing wool sweaters to bed. Last memorial day it snowed. Today was really nice 60 degrees. I took a hike on the hill behind my house, there is 2' of corn snow still on the north side of the hill in the shady spots. Sometimes there is snow there in June.
