You were right about the Grumman Ironworks & Teller's bet was either
1. whether or not the entire atmosphere would be ignited by the A-bomb blast?

Number 1. He told them their "toy" was a firecracker, he was going to build a real bomb. He went on to develop the first hydrogen bomb.

Number 1.

Did you know that Dr. Edward Teller was who "Dr. Strangelove" was supposed to be?

Did you see these?

1. Early in the war in the Atlantic, German U-boats were sent to the US East coast where they managed to sink alot of our ships....Many within sight of beachgoers. What was the code name (english or German) of that German operation?
2. German admiral in charge of U-boats? (also head of Germany after Hitler killed himself)
3. German name of their re-supply subs that would refuel & rearm U-boats at sea?

"Toy" was close to the nickname the scientists called the A-bomb prototype...They reffered to it as "The Gadget"

Pearl Harbor Questions:

1. Who fired the first shot on the day of the attack? ("who" generic....... not looking for a name)
2. Famous radio broadcast announcing the attack to the world
3. Japanese Admiral who commanded the attack (killed at Midway 6 months later)
4. How many of our aircraft carriers were sunk during the attack?
5. Code broadcast to the attacking fleet (by Tokyo) in mid-Pacific that meant: "Proceed with the mission"?

1. A US destroyer chasing a Jap mini sub.
2. A Honolulu station was first, but I think CBS announced it to the world.
3. Admiral Nagumo.
4. None. There actually were very few capital ships lost in the attack. I believe only three or four were not returned to service.
5. Climb Mount Nitaka.

What German aircraft lost more pilots to fueling than to combat?
What was the fuel?
What did Hitler tell Willie Messershmidt when he showed the Fuhrer his ME-262 jet fighter?

That he wanted it made into a bomber/attack aircraft?

Let's jump to the battle of Midway:

1. How many torpedo hits did we inflict on the 4 Jap carriers we sank?
2. What US Admiral was the onsight force commander?
3. Where was Yamamoto at the time of the attack?
4. What US attack is now credited with forcing the Japanese to mount the Midway campaign?
5. What Jap attack was made as a ruse/fake to draw us away from Midway, as part of the overall Midway plan?

Morning Richard,
Halsey is wrong but you are right about the Doolitle raid which did little real damage but scared the Japanese so badly that they drew up plans for the Midway attack which arguably lost the war for them in one afternoon.

Yes the Komet. It's fuel was Hydrazine and Hydrogen Peroxide. No need for an ignition source with this combo, Hydrazine will go off if it even thinks there is Peroxide near it.

Yup, the fool told him to turn them into bombers. It cost them a year before they were finally put into service.

What happens when a ME-262 tries to keep up with a P-47 in a full power dive? :)

1. How many torpedo hits did we inflict on the 4 Jap carriers we sank? I want to say Zero...I believe all were sunk using dive bombers In case I'm wrong...my second guess is....just enough to sink them...

2. What US Admiral was the onsight force commander? This is a guess also...Adm Spruance
Spruance sticks in my head because there was a significant role he played in Midway that he thought he was not prepared or qualified to do the job because I believe he was just a Destroyer Squadron Commander prior. In other words the role Spruance played in Midway meant he was filling some very larger boondockers.

5. What Jap attack was made as a ruse/fake to draw us away from Midway, as part of the overall Midway plan? This I would say was the attack on the Aleutian Islands

Not sure.....I'm thinking something about the speed of sound instability that Chuck Yeager solved but, since the ME-262 had swept wings & the P47 didn't, I would think the P47 would run into instabilty problems first??
