Layoff at Blaschak Coal
Local paper had this article about layoff of 27 workers, mostly mining workers. Said it was due to a abnormally warm winter and a decline in home heating usage due to the warm winter.

NO, its all my fault, just ask my cat!!! I hope that I will not get blamed for this too as I have
bought 8 tons ahead to stockpile it at the home place.
Maybe it's because the price was too high over the last years... TSC is selling Kimmels, etc I'm sure that cut into Blaschak's business. I got my Kimmel and Leheigh so much cheaper then Blaschak this season. I bought 8 ton from TSC.

Blaschak should lower it's price. In fact they all should lower their price's. Why can't they do what oil is doing, and go down to lowest price's in years. If the price of coal goes up, most of the time it don't come down to compete with oil. There a quite a few people on the forum that are using oil just for that reason. Don't get me wrong coal is still better heat, however it's easier to just turn up the thermostat and forget it. Higher prices just might have cost 27 people their jobs foe the next 6 weeks.

Hmm this is difficult to pin down. Is it because Blashchak pays it's employees more and thus must pass on higher costs to the consumer? Maybe the owners pocket more money thus they have higher costs? Maybe they decided to not sell to TSC at the price Kimmels did?
One thing is for sure if Blashchak is losing money they will not survive they need to stop losing money any way they can. I am sure it is not easy for anyone running a company to layoff people but if it is for the survival of the whole then which is worse? Everyone losing their jobs or only some losing their jobs at Blashchak?

The 27 employees at Blaschak that are layed off for six weeks are equipment operators and truck drivers. It's only six weeks and they will collect unemployment. I know two of them and they say it is all due to slow sales.

Glad to hear that it is just a temporary layoff. I pray that the families are able to span the gap in earnings and that other American jobs are not significantly impacted. I went with coal to support legal US citizens.
