- Coal Size/Type: Rice
- Other Heating: Buderus Oil Boiler 3115-34
Is it me or reality? I emptied my Keystoker 90 ash pan tonite and it seemed heavier. Is it possible the ash becomes denser as the burn rate drops?

- Stoker Coal Boiler: Gentleman Janitor GJ-5, Van Wert VA-600, Axeman Anderson130 X3.
- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
- Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
That's because the burner is idling a lot more during this time of year. An Idle fire has less air and therefore burns at a cooler temperature. This means more partly burnt coal ends up in the ash pan. Partly burnt coal weighs more than ash does.
So, no, you are not crazy, the ash pan is heavier.
