If you own a full retail copy of XP (any version) you can keep it "forever" and legally install it on a replacement machine.
OEM XP licenses "die with the hardware they are originally installed on". (legally :D )

WRT to "forever", owning and using a license of WfW3.11 in 2008 is proof that immortality might not be all it's cracked up to be.

The new version of Windows is already in "near beta". MS knows they have an issue with the V-word.

The next version will get it right. Think ME=VISTA.
