0.004 x Your Locations Annual HDD's x Sq-Ft of Heated Living Space = Heating Appliances Minimum Required Output BTUH
Disclaimer: No guarantee expressed or implied. I was bored today and looking for some amusement, so clearly use this at your own risk. Your mileage may vary based upon the homes insulation, windows, basement, crawl space, air infiltration, age, cathedral ceilings, living area sitting over an unheated garage, etc... But you've got to start somewhere, and this should get you to the middle ground.
Note: Most heating appliances are rated by their maximum Input BTUH. Output BTUH/Appliance Efficiency Rating (as a fraction) = Input BTUH

I was waiting to see if this was you Larry, but apparently it wasn't :lsayre wrote:0.004 x Your Locations Annual HDD's x Sq-Ft of Heated Living Space = Heating Appliances Minimum Required Output BTUH

For the most part I only do elementary school level math. That guy was probably doing something much more complex.

At least some portion of the differential between 25 and 40 was due to the inefficiency of older heating appliances vs. newer heating appliances, combined with using Input BTUH instead of Output BTUH.plumberman wrote:25 btus per sq ft new construction. 40 BTU old construction
There are probably homes being built presently that can get by with as few as 15 Output BTU's per square foot.
My simplistic approach yields:
5,000 HDD's x 0.004 = 20 Output BTU's per sq-ft
5,500 HDDS x 0.004 = 22 Output BTU's per sq-ft
6,000 HDD's x 0.004 = 24 Output BTU's per sq-ft
6,500 HDD's x 0.004 = 26 Output BTU's per sq-ft (I'm about here)
7,000 HDD's x 0.004 = 28 Output BTU's per sq-ft
7,500 HDD's x 0.004 = 30 Output BTU's per sq-ft
8,000 HDD's x 0.004 = 32 Output BTU's per sq-ft (Rob should be about here)

Been charcoal grilling for a good part of Mother's day. 3 phases of cooking were done to maximize the utilization of a single load of charcoal on our small grill (which was intended to be a side-smoker add-on to a much larger grill, but which the wife and I use as a stand-alone grill).freetown fred wrote:Come on, it's beautiful outside!
Phase 1, Western Style Ribs
Phase 2, Burgers and Brats (today's meal)
Phase 3, Pot roast cooked on the grill in our cast iron Dutch Oven (just got done bring this one in)
Boredom ended when the grilling operation started....
We would expect nothing less!!!lsayre wrote:Been charcoal grilling for a good part of Mother's day. 3 phases of cooking were done to maximize the utilization of a single load of charcoal on our small grill (which was intended to be a side-smoker add-on to a much larger grill, but which the wife and I use as a stand-alone grill).freetown fred wrote:Come on, it's beautiful outside!

I should also have mentioned that:
Input BTUH x Appliances Efficiency Rating (as a fraction) = Output BTUH
Input BTUH x Appliances Efficiency Rating (as a fraction) = Output BTUH
