I remember Windows, you mean Microsoft is still in business? Won't be long now. Flight Simulator was the best of that bunch.

This is no surprise. Typically in the past you had updates and upgrades and this applies to all software. Updates are bug fixes and perhaps some minor features added. Upgrades were major deployments with many new features and major enhancements. A lot of software has moved to a new model where you don't have major releases but instead major features are rolled out individually with updates.
I wouldn't be concerned about waking up some morning and having to pay for Win10. What is probably going to happen here is they will implement the subscription based model perhaps in a year or two. If you don't switch to subscription based you'll be stuck with only security and bug updates for an indefinite amount of time. It would be no different than if you had bought it.
