I all I'm pretty new to coal heating . I had a failed attempt last year trying it in my so called wood/coal furnace.
But I just picked A SURDIAC 720 and I think it may need a thermostat It kinda just snaps open then it will close slowly.
I emailed meyers and they are out and trying to find some. This has been a great site for learning about this type of stove.
If any knows of another place for parts for these stoves it would be a great help. thanks

Welcome Sopwith!
Hang in there. There are more than a few Surdiac users on this sight and I am sure some will be along to help you out. It is the middle of Summer and it gets kind of slow here on NEPA.
Again.. WELCOME!!!

Sopwith,
I have some spare Surdiac parts in storage. I will look to see if I have a thermostat tonight after work.
Any other parts that you may need?
Tim

Thanks for looking Tim. The rest of the stove looks pretty good , but I have not lit it yet either . I will have to do some sanding and painting , my wife thinks its ugly. I am going to remove the thermostat to see what is going on it may be fixable , it feels like a gear tooth is missing but not sure how its set up inside.ElCamMan515 wrote:Sopwith,

When you put on the thermostat, you may notice that the flapper door does not mount flush with the hole going into the stove. That is how it should be, to always allow a small amount of air into the stove. Do not bend it straight, which would be an easy thing to think and do. Forgive me if you already knew this. Good luck!

Hi all.
First off I forgot to thank ONEDOLLAR for the welcome , so thanks
I did remove the thermostat and I think this one is ok , I may just have to move the dial like joeq did.
I will keep your pm Tim I may very well need some parts , just not sure until I see how it runs.
I have one other question for now.
I am piping this up through a fireplace and my space is limited , my plan is to try to go without a baro at least at first.
the chimney is in the center of the house and I've never had draft problems with wood. any thoughts on this good or bad?
I also have another wood stove on the sun porch with a heat reclaimer in the pipe. (My wife loves that thing so it stays for now.) and my wood/ "COAL" furnace in the basement.
As well as an old oil burner that I moth balled yrs ago.

As long as the ash door is airtight, the thermostat should be able to control the stove without a baro.
Center chimney is the best.

Both doors feel tight and the gaskets look good , probably won't know for sure til its running.franco b wrote:As long as the ash door is airtight, the thermostat should be able to control the stove without a baro.

But the stove looks to be in good shape , the grates look good as does the hopper. I don't think the people got it from knew what they had. They were remodeling their house and this had to go , I paid 50 for it. In the same town a guy is selling one for 375.00 with some coal.

Close a dollar bill at various places around the ash door to see if the bill is gripped, indicating a good fit.

Hows your glass? How about the heat exchanger?

The glass is stained kind of a red tinge to it and feels rough on the inside , not sure what to clean it with.confedsailor wrote:Hows your glass? How about the heat exchanger?
The heat exchanger looks fine , maybe new gaskets for the clean out ports.
I'm kinda worried about firing it up and finding a slew of troubles.
