Bear at the Bird Feeder
Great video, thanks for posting. I doubt he will fare well on his own. It will either starve or be killed this winter. Are there any bear rescue organizations? Maybe a zoo would be interested in taking him in.
We don't have any bears around here, but a couple months ago one was running loose here. The local radio station was taking calls and reporting the sightings. It was seen about three miles from me, then a few days later it crossed the road and ran down my pasture fence line, through the hedge and onto the farm behind me. My neighbor was outside about 20 ft away. He said the bear never broke stride, just turned its head and looked at him as it ran by. The neighbor was a little shook up, said it was at least 300 lbs, but I'm skeptical of that. A couple hours later a caller claimed they saw it in a parking lot about 4 miles north, but by dark it was back down my way. A caller said they shot it less than a mile from me, but when DNR arrived they said they just fired a shot to scare it away. Then instead of running, it climbed a tree. DNR said the bear was fine, in good health, running loose and everyone should leave it alone. Haven't heard anything since.

Yes, their nature is to run most of the time. But this one is severely injured and doesn't have the ability to flee at their normal running gate of about 30 mph. Anything could happen if one were to come face to face with it.coalfan wrote:no passing thru he or she shall return just be careful they can get meeen but over all that is not there nature !!!and again very good pix !!!!! oh and they make good burgers and chilly to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please be careful.

Just for the bears sake--I'd still call your game warden & let him/her know ya got one in the area. AND YES, a face to face with a kid/ family dog could get ugly real quick.

I just encountered a bear hanging around the tarp covering our surplus coal pile from last winter. I suggested that if he really wasn't planning to hibernate, he should make some calls and get his own stash. But I didn't stay to argue the point.

I think that bear is hurting. He looked thin and likely not getting enough food. He could barely move, no pun. I hope he gets rescued and looked at by the state wildlife professionals. He needs help for sure.

Here's a picture I took July 29th. Our wire haired fox terrier chased him up that group of 3 trees behind the one in the foreground. She thinks she's boss over everything. Dennis

Take it from a guy that just had the good fortune to get 2 different eastern box turtles out of the highly traveled roadways here locally in Pa and place them way back in the woods. It feels good inside to help something that can't help himself. I think this bear of yours could use a hand because the bugger is obviously hurting and limited in several ways. Even a nice big cage at some exibit someplace might be better than the winter this dude has to look forward to. Folks will do almost anything to eat when hungry enough and we are no different from animals in that respect. Give a call. phew, off the soapbox now. Mike

Just thought I'd share an update. We haven't seen the bear since. It's been about a month, the bird Feeder hasn't been tampered with. Thanks for everyone's concern for the bear, we felt bad for him too.
