I'm selling my S130 coal boiler and someone is asking me if they can burn rice coal in it rather than pea coal. Can this boiler (purchased in 2008) be setup to burn rice coal?

Everything I see says pea or buckwheat size.

I have heard of guys burning rice in them just to get rid of it, but I wouldn't plan on burning it routinely.

Better ask AHS. It may promote loads of puff-backs.

Another potential issue is carbon monoxide. The S130 needs to breathe when idle (which is most of the time) so CO properly goes up the chimney and out. Rice coal may greatly hinder this breathing.

The main issue with rice is poor airflow through the burn pot during the active firing cycle. Occasionally, folks buy rice by mistake or have preexisting coal inventory to use up. You can mix rice with pea coal to use it. Don't go below a 2:1 ratio of pea to rice. More pea is better. If using buckwheat, stay at 4:1 or higher.

Even if it works it will seriously reduce the unit's output and increase reaction times.
