40' of fin tube = 22,000 BTU,

I am thinking of using two 11,500 BTU cast iron rads.

I would put a bit more radiation in your budget. Remember, that radiator will put out 11,500 BTU IF you have 180 degree water in it. You will want to deliver enough heat to your room with 150 or 160 degree water. That way you won't have to keep your aquastat at 190 or 200 degrees. Lower aquastat temps mean, less stand-by loss and less fuel used.

Don, I have a space in that family room to put a 3 footer on top of the two 4 footers. Do you think that would cut it ?

Yes, and having radiators on each exterior wall is better yet.

Rob has a good point on putting a radiator on each outside wall. This will help even out the spread of heat.

Don't forget, you can use the chart in the Columbia guide to calculate the BTU output of the radiator at any water temperature. This is where they get the number 170 for hot water.

Yesterday morning I used that chart to calculate the BTU output of all the radiators I intend to use at 140 degrees. Looks like you have a real nice collection so if you need to install one or two more later it won't be a big deal.

Don,

Thanks! I decided to put some tile in front of the sliding doors, and a small radiant in floor loop to help with my exterior wall needs.

The room is black! the trim will be white, windows are white, Tile is grey, and floor is red oak, with a walnut stain on it. :)

Got my supply of coal today, LOTS going on here as usual.
