Millway PA, Lancaster County pumping station

PostBy: pintoplumber On: Mon Aug 15, 2016 8:03 pm

For the first 17 1/2 years I grew up in a company house in Millway PA. My dad worked for Southern Pipeline Company in the late 30's 40's and 50's. I found these pictures, they were mislaid for a couple of years. I'm not sure this is the right topic heading. Dennis

Always enjoy looking at old pictures of a bygone era, that wasn't too far from where I grew up as well. I had a great uncle (I guess it was) that nearly died in a train wreck
not far from Connellsville, Pa. where a lot of folks actually got cooked to death from the steam.

When I was a kid in the 1960's, the boilers were gone from the boiler house. There was a big square or rectangular sheet metal plenum going into the smokestack. The pigeons lived there. At night you could go there and catch pigeons. If it was windy enough, the pigeons could fly up the smokestack and get out the top. If they didn't make it, they would fall back down and you could catch them. We would take them to the auction and sell them. A little money besides selling night crawlers. Dennis

I lived near here as a child in the 60s, rode my bicycle there alot, a classmate of mine lived along Rothsville Rd near there. It was abandoned by the time I saw it, allways wondered what it was. Anyone remember the train wreck near there in the mid 60s?

Mike, we lived in the middle company house. I was standing on the front porch and witnessed the train wreck. Being a train nut I always watched the trains go by. I got my picture in the Lancaster New Era. I was 16 at the time. Dennis

I didn't witness the train wreck (if I had, I probably would have felt guilty about placing pennies on the train track for the wheels to flatten). The smokestack is just a hazy memory. I do recall some smaller structures near the tracks on the north side of Rothsville Road - maybe unrelated to the pumping station. As a kid I nosed around in them a few times, standing water on the floor and no machinery as far as I remember.

There was a metal building in the cornfield that was a manifold building. It was empty when I was a kid. Dennis

I lived over on Newport Rd, across from Rabbit Hill Rd, we heard the wreck from there, and went to look.
