So, after a couple yrs. of being let loose the "hounds" have come home with verified finds of 4 available Base Burners in complete, undamaged, simple restore conditions all with in 250 mls. of me.
they are, in order of proximity, Regal Jewel 316( double heater ), Crown Jewel 316( double heater ), Sunburst Peninsular, Regal Peninsula #46
now the problems begin with an attempt to establish needing them.
I have 2 658 sq. ft finished stories over an equal sized unfinished basement in a house with just 2 insulated side walls on the first floor, 4" of old worthless loose rock wool in the attic. open front central staircase to second floor and a masonry chimney dead center in the house.
my Riteway #37, the DS 1400 circ, the same stove converted to full base burner and my custom built base heater, double heater Locke Warm Morning based stove have all heated this house well to excessively ( not a bad thing )
i also have a Locke Warm Morning #524 in easy restore or conversion condition that has a 19"W x 25" D firepot and because of it's generous design can easily become a base burner with fully internal exhaust bypass and double heater air paths.
so, I would not need any of these stoves for their specific heating abilities but rather to satisfy some ego based desire to have one of the few left and in each of their cases, among the very top of their types ever produced.
should I buy one or insulate the house and augment my "less is more" stance ?
thanks,
steve

while I fundamentally agree with this point I have working stoves and fuel enough to heat for some yrs. with the house in it,s present condition, and I can insulate this or any yr.
TSB,
all of them would seriously cramp my space and offend my sense of the right consideration of others. I could buy one this yr. and insulate next though.

Break the speed limit to get all of them. Fix them all if possible, sell all but one, or sell all of them, use money made to buy the insulation next year or later.
you know you love working on and looking at stoves. Follow your love.
Sometimes you just cant do the right thing, or the thing that makes sense. if it were me I'd insulate but I do not like working on these stoves like you do.

Steve,
I'm probably not the best person to offer impartial advice on the subject, but I am leaning towards the buy them all suggestion if they are priced right. You obviously have both the expertise and ambition to restore all four.
As you are well aware, the greatest restoration expense is the nickel plating and if it is respectable, just buff it out. If not, it gives you time to decide which one (or how many) you want to keep, and sell the remainder to purchase your insulation.
PS ....... Don't show this post to your wife.

You must buy at least one.
It is too much a part of your life and interest to pass up.
Your emotional need is just as important as any seemingly practical decision.

right, I need to do almost all the side walls AND the attic. I have input on pricing already.Den034071 wrote:Steve a thought buy at least one .Also get a Price On The insulation Job .Right now it is an unknown figure . if I buy just one i'd probably keep it and one of the stoves I already have and liquidate the rest of my warm morning stock.
if I bought the lot it would pretty much be the same thing.
either way I would net in excess of the cost of the insulation I need.
thanks,
steve

this is well balanced advise and actually my own feeling as well.Rob R. wrote:Insulation pays you back everyday. Move forward with the insulation, and buy your favorite stove out of the 4.
it makes the stove choice easier too. if i'm going to buy one of these it needs to be a double heater, which I believe the Detroit Stove Works Jewel line had the very best design ever. triangular air flue with all 3 sides directly exposed to internal stove heat levels.
i'll start a conversation about the Crown Jewel and see where it goes.
thanks,
steve
