Hi everyone I am looking at buying a used Harman magnum stoker, from a dealer, asking 1,200.00
for my sister who can no longer burn with wood. and she is not at all familiar with coal burning. I will be able to load coal for her. are there any special operating guidelines, and how easy is it to use for a beginner. is that a good price. ??
Thanks in advance.

Plenty discussion here already, give the SEARCH a try.

As for price, if gone over by a reptuable dealer then price is good, but hard to say w/o seeing it.

Age is uncovered by knowing if it is a 3 window or a 1 window, has 1 piece grate or a 2 piece grate. One window and 2 piece grate makes it not the oldest one.
Pictures can help us make better evaluations. ;)

Welcome to 'Der Coal Board ! Alas,I'm afraid Mr. McGiev's hit the nail on the head ! There's alot of variables at play here. Yes,pics can help, but knowing what to look for in terms of corrosion, stoker mechanism wear and tear, gasket condition on doors and stoker mounting in the rear of unit and so on. That unit has two blowers, one for combustion air,and one for blowing the heated air off of the stove. They can be a little pricey to replace. You can do alot of base knowledge learning about that unit by using the search bar in the upper right hand of the page. Start doing some intense reading and learning. This will help You and Your Sis greatly. Another thing to find out would be does this unit have the original Harman Contoller or has it been converted to a Coaltrol unit ? I didn't want to toss in any comments until We had Your post moved to the right section of Our Board. This is still a slow time of the year,so be patient in waiting for some more responses. A final point, tell us what kind of a flu/chimney does Your Sis have,or are You going to have to install one?
