My HITZER will burn well no matter what I put in her with the bi-metallic thermo--light up & don't touch till spring. Other then tending every 12 hrs or so. To old to complicate life any more then it already is!

I have not done this, but have read some put some ash on top of nut to slow it down too, or fines.
If you buy crappy coal it comes in rice pea nut and stove all in one bag, all by accident Dont ask how I know.
Just remember it all has the same btu, its how slow you get it to burn that matters. And remember your results may be entirely different than the next person using the same stove.

Start off with nut, and once you get the hang of burning coal you can go off the reservation.

I've burned pea & I've burned nut in the mild temps. I can control the stove to output the same with both. So I just get nut now.
