Vote on the name for my new business!

PostBy: EarthWindandFire On: Mon Sep 19, 2016 5:01 pm

Today I met with my business mentor that I connected with through my local SCORE chapter. He suggested that I nail down a business name before this moves along too much further. In the past you guys have offered invaluable advice so I'm sure you will again. Here are my top choices but feel free to offer suggestions. Remember, this is a wholesale business which doesn't sell directly to consumers (retail) but instead sells to pre-qualified customers who are either cabinetmakers, woodworkers, furniture manufacturers or kitchen and bath remodelers.

1). The Plywood Company.
2). The Plywood Factory.
3). The Plywood Depot.
4). Fairfield County Plywood.
5). The Plywood Warehouse.
6). Yankee Plywood & Hardware.
7). Connecticut Wood Products.

Thanks!

If we could only look back on years of our business careers, ...... would we chose the same name ? :D

When I started my business 35 years ago, I came up with a very business-specific name that fit well what I was doing 35 years ago. But my businesses grow to include other things that are not just what I thought I'd be doing initially. The upshot is my business name doesn't really say what I do and I often have to explain to potential customers who may think that going by the business name, I can't help them.

I'd suggest thinking about a name that doesn't back your business into a "name corner". It can make future customers pass up on you by thinking "that company can only offer what the company name says".

So...... where do you see your business being in 5 years, ..... 10 years. Do you want to be able to expand it into other services and materials ?

BTW as nice as it sounds, I would recommend that you don't use the word "engineering" in your company name unless you are, or have engineers on staff able to deal with customers to engineer materials to solve their problems.

And unless your moving to Long Island, the "Gold Coast" is the other side of the sound. :D

My 2 cents.

If your business will handle more than plywood, the first 5 are out. If your business will handle more than just wood, number 7 is out. If you don't like number 6, or of it's already taken and you will handle more than wood, how about:

Keep it short and sweet...
3 letter acronym rolls off the lips well...
Project Supply Center...
PSC...
Something like that so as your company morphs over time...
Your name remains relevant...
You can sell tools of the trade...
Fasteners of the trade...
You can make it online too...
Look at McFeelys...
https://www.mcfeelys.com/?utm_source=AdWords&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Keywords&gclid=CL2Ej6r0nM8CFVVahgodg5cMvw
No to plywood in the name...
Keep the Domain name short too...
under 8 letters if you can...
ProjectSupplyCenter.com is available...
Sell the service end of it if you want to make any money...
Most things are commodity priced now...
The consultant aspect is where the money is...
High-end homes and projects...
Hell if they are selling $42k vanity bowls sans cabinet...
Houses having 7 $25k toilets...
That is just The Cape...
But property is cheaper here so they can afford some nicer stuff inside... ;)

I'm likin' #7 best of those.

It gives the business more wiggle room down the road if the business morphs into a change of direction, and or, adding on other items and services besides plywood. To me, it better covers room for potential growth. Something that, being naive, I didn't anticipate happening to my business.

Within a few years after all the paperwork connected with the name was filed, I regretted having to occasionally deal with a company name that was very limiting in it's description as the business expanded into other fields. I'm not upset with how it grew, just that in hindsight, a less work-specific company name would have made things easier at times.

And fortunately, I never had to advertise, so the name not saying what the business became isn't a constant burden, but for a company that relies more on name recognition it might be.

None of them. As your business grows and you establish distribution channels you might diversify and find plywood is not even your main product. Select a more generic name.

Suggestions:

Sunnyspornproducts Inc.
Slimyandshifty Inc.
Overpricedyoubet Inc.

Hmm, am I helping? However the first suggestion is serious.

Don't localize or regionalize your business through its name (unless you intend to do business only locally or regionally). This can marginalize the customer base.
