Hand Fed Coal Stove: Penn Royal Model 3418

Post by venator260 » Wed. Sep. 21, 2016 9:08 pm

I think I know what the answer will be with this one, but just in case someone knows a source for these:

I need just the shaker grates out of a Penn Royal hand fired stove. They're not unusable as of yet, but are sagging such that it will soon not be possible to get the ash pan under them. Does anyone know a source for these. Even if the center wasn't movable and I could find a generic square grate the correct size, that would work; never found the side to side motion to be that useful when shaking.

I took two pictures:

And here's a pic of the stove that it came from:

This may be impossible but, Could you just flip it upside-down and get another 20 years before it sags again to interfere with the ash pan withdraw?

Unfortunately, no. Gravity holds it together. Also, upside down, the shaker handle would be in the firebox.

Shucks :(
Well since you say rotation is not a must, why not opt for a one piece custom made heavy 1/2" or 3/4" plate steel grate with a loose fit and hole openings of your liking? A local steel fabrication shop could make one for you.

I've looked through their listings. Nothing seems to be the appropriate size.

Would plate steel (even thick plate) hold up to the heat? The load of burning coal or wood would be directly on top of it. I have avoided asking my dad to make something up because I just assumed steel would sag in short order.

Steel does have a higher melting point but will sag sooner than the cast. I have no idea why, probably the grain structure in it. It may work but I would guess not for very long.

You could try contacting Al at Tomahawk Foundry by email and send him some pix and measurements. Then he can tell you if he can help and about what it will cost.

He does a lot of the recasting of stove parts for members here. And he has lots experience at being able to straighten some warped grates so that he can then use them as patterns to recast new cast iron grates.

A friend gave me a behemoth Penn Royal stove that looks like the one in the picture above *except* it has a hot air jacket around it. However it has _no shaker_ or any indication of ever having had a shaker or a handle. Can I burn coal in it by slicing or poking the coal bed? I've only used wood in it so far.

Do you know any history on the Penn Royal stoves, manuals, etc?

Ven......,
I found this on New Hampshire Craigslist. Located in Maine. C/L ID#6782221531. Asking price $100. It's a coal fireplace grate-24"L-16"deep-12"high. Something like this may work for you.
I would post the link, but I have yet to 'master' cut-&-paste. Good luck.
Cheers
